Ruling party leader Han Dong-hoon on Thursday reiterated his call for first lady Kim Keon Hee to withdraw from public activities following the People's Power Party's victories in crucial by-elections the previous day.
During a Supreme Council meeting, Han emphasized the need for a presidential office reshuffle to eliminate individuals close to Kim who are perceived to exert undue influence on state affairs. He stated, "First lady Kim Keon Hee should refrain from public activities in keeping with her promise during the presidential election." He added that it is essential to address the public's concerns.
The People's Power Party secured two out of four contested seats in the by-elections held on Wednesday, specifically in Busan's Geumjeong District and Incheon's Ganghwa County. This outcome was viewed as a demonstration of public confidence in Han's leadership, particularly in light of his commitment to addressing controversies surrounding the first lady.
Kim has faced allegations related to stock manipulation, illegal acceptance of a luxury bag, and interference with candidate nominations for the previous April's general elections.
Han stressed the urgent need for a personnel overhaul at the presidential office concerning first lady Kim, asserting that an honest explanation of the allegations is necessary. He called for active procedures to ascertain the truth behind the claims.
He interpreted the results of the by-elections as a mandate from the public to implement change, stating, "We will change and reform with courage, dedication and precision."

김건희는 주식 조작, 고급 가방의 불법 수수, 그리고 지난 4월 총선 후보 추천에 대한 개입 등 여러 혐의에 연루되어 있다.
한 대표는 "퍼스트레이디 김과 관련된 인사 개편이 반드시 필요하며, 긴급히 진행되어야 한다"며 "제기된 혐의에 대한 솔직한 설명이 필요하고, 진위 여부를 확인하기 위한 절차가 필요하다면 적극적으로 따르는 것이 필수적이다"라고 강조했다.
한 대표는 재보궐선거 결과를 변화의 기회로 해석했다.
"우리는 용기와 헌신, 정밀함으로 변화를 이루고 개혁할 것"이라고 말했다.
