Container shipping costs from South Korea to China rose for the eighth consecutive month in September, according to the customs agency's report on Tuesday.
The average shipping cost for a 40-foot container from South Korea to China increased by 17.6 percent month-on-month, reaching 862,000 won ($634.48) last month, as per data from the Korea Customs Service.
This upward trend in shipping costs has been ongoing since February.
In contrast, the average shipping costs from South Korea to the European Union decreased by 14.7 percent, marking the first decline in five months. Additionally, costs for the South Korea-Vietnam route fell by 11.1 percent, the first drop in eight months.
Shipping costs from South Korea to the US east coast also saw a reduction of 5.7 percent.
However, when compared to the previous year, shipping costs for these routes have more than doubled, primarily due to tensions in the Red Sea and an increase in global cargo volume, according to officials.
Overall, shipping costs from overseas generally decreased in September.
Specifically, costs from the US west coast to South Korea dropped by 16.5 percent, while those from Europe fell by 15 percent. Shipping costs from the US east coast to South Korea also declined by 7.6 percent month-on-month in September, as reported by the agency.
The figures include freight rates, commissions, and other charges reported by local exporters, according to the agency. (Yonhap)

반면, 한국에서 유럽연합(EU)으로의 평균 운송 비용은 14.7% 하락했으며, 이는 5개월 만에 처음 있는 감소다. 한국-베트남 노선의 비용도 8개월 만에 처음으로 11.1% 감소했다.
한국에서 미국 동부로의 운송 비용은 5.7% 하락했다.
하지만, 작년과 비교할 때 이러한 노선의 운송 비용은 두 배 이상 증가했으며, 이는 주로 홍해 주변의 긴장과 세계 화물량 증가에 기인한다고 관계자들이 전했다.
해외에서 한국으로의 운송 비용은 일반적으로 9월에 하락했다.
미국 서부에서 한국으로의 비용은 16.5% 감소했고, 유럽에서 한국으로의 비용은 15% 하락했다. 또한, 미국 동부에서 한국으로의 운송 비용은 9월에 비해 7.6% 감소했다.
