The number of pilots newly hired by South Korean air carriers increased by 8 percent year-on-year through August, according to recent data, reflecting a rebound in travel demand following the pandemic.
During the January-August period, 11 air carriers employed 537 new pilots, up from 498 in the same timeframe a year prior. This information was shared by a representative of the main opposition party, citing data from the transport ministry.
This hiring trend represents a notable rise from the annual average of 135 pilots recruited between 2020 and 2022, a period dominated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Korean Air led the way in new pilot hires, bringing on board 119 pilots. T'way Air Co., a low-cost carrier, followed closely with 114 new pilots, expanding its team after being designated as an alternative carrier for four routes to European cities, including Rome and Paris, in light of Korean Air's planned merger with Asiana Airlines Inc.
Eastar Jet Co., another low-cost carrier, hired 79 pilots, while Jin Air Co. and Air Busan Co. recruited 68 and 39 pilots, respectively. Notably, Asiana Airlines has not conducted any pilot hiring since last year.
In addition to pilots, South Korean air carriers also recruited 1,216 flight attendants in the same eight-month period, nearing the total of 1,238 hired throughout all of 2023.

항공사별로 보면, 대한항공이 119명의 파일럿을 가장 많이 채용했으며, 저비용 항공사인 T'way Air가 114명으로 뒤를 이었다.
T'way는 대한항공의 아시아나항공과의 예정된 합병에 따라 로마, 바르셀로나, 프랑크푸르트, 파리 등 유럽 도시로 운항하는 네 가지 노선의 대체 항공사로 지정된 이후 파일럿 수를 확대하고 있다.
또 다른 저비용 항공사인 이스타항공은 79명의 파일럿을 채용했으며, 진에어와 Air Busan이 각각 68명과 39명을 채용했다. 아시아나는 지난해 이후로 신규 파일럿을 채용하지 않았다.
한편, 한국 항공사에서 새롭게 채용된 승무원 수는 8개월 동안 1,216명에 달했으며, 이는 2023년 전체 채용 수치인 1,238명에 가까워지고 있는 것으로 나타났다.
