South Koreans voted Wednesday to elect the education chief of Seoul and four local government heads, with results expected to gauge public sentiment following the April general elections.
The by-elections included five local administrative positions: the superintendent of the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, and the heads of Geumjeong District in Busan, Ganghwa County in Incheon, and Yeonggwang and Gokseong counties in South Jeolla Province.
Voting commenced at 6 a.m. and is scheduled to continue until 8 p.m. at 2,404 polling centers nationwide, as reported by the National Election Commission (NEC). Of the 8.64 million eligible voters, 775,971 participated in early voting last week, resulting in a turnout of 8.98 percent.
The NEC reported that overall voter turnout by 9 a.m. Wednesday, excluding early voting figures, stood at 2.11 percent.
Observers suggest that this election will test the leadership of the ruling People Power Party and the main opposition Democratic Party, led by Han Dong-hoon and Lee Jae-myung, respectively, both of whom are viewed as potential presidential candidates.
The election outcome could significantly influence the second half of President Yoon Suk Yeol's five-year term, especially as the opposition ramps up its political offensive against the ruling party and the president, with discussions surrounding potential impeachment gaining traction.
The PPP aims for strong performances in its traditional strongholds of Geumjeong District and Ganghwa County to mitigate declining approval ratings following its significant defeat in the April 10 parliamentary elections.
On the other hand, the DP is competing in a three-way race in Yeonggwang County but feels optimistic about winning in Gokseong. Additionally, it hopes to overturn the PPP's standing in Geumjeong District.

사전투표의 투표율은 8.98%로 집계됐다.
중앙선거관리위원회에 따르면, 수요일 오전 9시 기준으로 사전투표를 제외한 전체 투표율은 2.11%로 나타났다.
관측통들은 이번 선거가 차기 대선 후보로 고려되는 여당인 국민의힘의 한동훈과 야당인 민주당의 이재명 당대표의 리더십을 시험하는 기회가 될 수 있다고 보고 있다.
선거 결과는 윤석열 대통령의 5년 임기 후반기를 형성할 수 있으며, 야당이 여당과 대통령에 대한 정치적 공세를 강화함에 따라 윤 대통령의 탄핵 가능성까지 제기되고 있다.
국민의힘은 4월 10일의 총선에서의 참패 이후 윤 대통령과 여당에 대한 지지율이 하락함에 따라 전통적인 기반인 부산 금정구와 인천 강화군에서의 대승을 노리고 있다.
민주당은 여수에서 두 개의 소수당과의 3자 대결을 벌이고 있으나 곡성에서의 승산이 있다고 판단하며, 금정구에서 국민의힘을 제압할 계획이다.
