South Korean stocks ended lower on Wednesday, primarily due to losses in technology shares amid concerns regarding their earnings. The local currency weakened against the US dollar.
The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index decreased by 23.09 points, or 0.88 percent, closing at 2,610.36, thereby ending a two-session winning streak.
Trading volume was moderate, with 429.5 million shares exchanged, valued at 9.8 trillion won ($7.2 billion), as decliners outnumbered advancers by 551 to 323.
Foreign investors were the main contributors to the decline, selling a net 664.3 billion won worth of shares, while individual investors purchased a net 655.5 billion won. Institutional investors sold a net 35 billion won.
In the United States, stocks closed sharply lower overnight due to disappointing earnings outlooks from chip equipment maker ASML Holdings. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 0.75 percent, while the Nasdaq Composite dropped by 1.01 percent.
In Seoul, semiconductor shares experienced the most significant losses. Samsung Electronics, the largest memory chipmaker, saw a decline of 2.46 percent, closing at 59,500 won, while its competitor, SK Hynix, fell by 2.18 percent to 188,700 won. Hanmi Semiconductor, a leading chip equipment producer, tumbled by 2.95 percent to 108,700 won.
Major shipbuilder HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering decreased by 1.13 percent to 192,900 won, and Korea Zinc, the largest zinc smelter, fell by 0.98 percent to 809,000 won.
Financial stocks also closed negatively as profit-taking occurred. Shinhan Financial Group dropped by 2.42 percent to 56,400 won, and food and beverage company Nongshim decreased by 1.3 percent to 380,500 won.
Conversely, leading battery maker LG Energy Solution increased by 0.25 percent to 404,500 won, while Hyundai Mobis, an auto parts affiliate of Hyundai Motor, surged by 7.81 percent to 241,500 won.
By 3:30 p.m., the local currency was trading at 1,362.6 won against the US dollar, down 1.3 won from the previous session.

서울에서 반도체 주식들이 가장 큰 하락폭을 보였습니다.

그러나 선도 배터리 제조업체인 LG 에너지솔루션은 0.25% 상승해 404,500원으로, 현대차의 자동차 부품 계열사 현대모비스는 7.81% 급등해 241,500원에 거래되었습니다.
오후 3시 30분 현재 원화는 미국 달러 대비 1,362.6원으로, 이전 거래일 대비 1.3원 하락했습니다.
