Seoul shares closed higher on Wednesday, driven by gains in the technology and automotive sectors amid concerns regarding a potentially slower pace in the Federal Reserve's rate cuts. The Korean won continued to weaken against the US dollar.
The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index increased by 28.92 points, or 1.1 percent, finishing at 2,599.62.
Trade volume remained moderate, with 345.96 million shares changing hands, totaling 9.25 trillion won ($6.7 billion). Gainers outnumbered losers, with 448 stocks rising compared to 408 that fell.
Institutions and foreign investors purchased a combined 510 billion won worth of stocks, which offset the 514 billion won in stock sales by individual investors.
Overnight, US markets closed with mixed results. The Dow Jones Industrial Average decreased by 0.02 percent to 42,924.89, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite rose by 0.18 percent to 18,573.13.
In Seoul, large-cap stocks displayed mixed performance. Market leader Samsung Electronics Co. saw a 2.4 percent increase to 59,100 won, while No. 2 chipmaker SK Hynix Inc. surged by 4.4 percent to 196,000 won. Top automaker Hyundai Motor Co. climbed 2.8 percent to 241,000 won, and state utility Korea Electric Power Corp. gained 0.7 percent to 21,950 won.
Conversely, among decliners, national flag carrier Korean Air Co. dropped 1.1 percent to 23,300 won. Leading shipping firm HMM fell 0.6 percent to 17,050 won, and major wireless services provider SK Telecom Co. declined 1.4 percent to 56,700 won.
As of 3:30 p.m., the local currency was trading at 1,382.20 won against the US dollar, down 2.1 won from the previous session, marking an eighth consecutive day of decline.

하락 종목 중에서는 국적 항공사 대한항공이 1.1% 하락하여 23,300원에 거래되었고, 주요 해운사 HMM은 0.6% 하락하여 17,050원을 기록했습니다. 주요 무선 서비스 제공업체인 SK텔레콤은 1.4% 하락하여 56,700원에 마감되었습니다.
