Seoul shares opened higher on Monday, following gains on Wall Street from the previous week.
The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (Kospi) increased by 5.19 points, or 0.2 percent, reaching 2,599.01 within the first 15 minutes of trading.
On Friday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose by 0.09 percent to 43,275.91, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite saw an increase of 0.63 percent, closing at 18,489.55.
In the Seoul market, large-cap stocks exhibited mixed performance.
Market leader Samsung Electronics Co. experienced a decline of 0.8 percent, auto parts manufacturer Hyundai Mobis Co. dropped by 1.2 percent, Kia Corp., the second-largest carmaker, fell by 0.2 percent, and Samsung Heavy Industries Co. was down 0.3 percent.
Conversely, among the gainers, Hyundai Motor Co., the top carmaker, rose by 0.4 percent, Korean Air Co., the national flag carrier, increased by 1.7 percent, LG Chem Ltd. climbed by 0.6 percent, and budget airline Jeju Air Co. was up 2.4 percent.
The local currency was trading at 1,367.60 won against the US dollar, reflecting an increase of 2.1 won from the previous session.

서울에서는 대형주들이 혼조세를 보였다.
시장 지표인 삼성전자는 0.8% 하락했고, 자동차 부품 제조업체 현대모비스는 1.2%, 2위 자동차 제조업체 기아는 0.2% 하락했으며, 삼성중공업은 0.3% 하락했다.
상승 종목 중에서는 1위 자동차 제조업체 현대차가 0.4% 상승했고, 국적 항공사 대한항공은 1.7%, LG화학은 0.6% 상승했으며, 주요 저가 항공사 제주항공은 2.4% 상승했다.
달러에 대한 원화 환율은 1,367.60원으로, 이전 거래보다 2.1원 상승했다.
