Seoul shares opened lower on Thursday, following losses on Wall Street amid concerns regarding a slower pace of rate cuts by the US Federal Reserve.
The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index decreased by 8.92 points, or 0.34 percent, to 2,590.70 within the first 15 minutes of trading.
Overnight, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 0.96 percent to 42,514.95, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite declined by 1.6 percent to 18,276.65.
In Seoul, large-cap stocks exhibited mixed performance.
Market leader Samsung Electronics Co. dropped by 2 percent, No. 2 chipmaker SK hynix Inc. fell by 1.5 percent, top carmaker Hyundai Motor Co. decreased by 1.5 percent, and state-run Korea Gas Corp. was down by 1.1 percent.
Conversely, among gainers, leading battery maker LG Energy Solution Ltd. rose by 2.5 percent, leading refiner SK Innovation Co. climbed by 0.9 percent, and national flag carrier Korean Air Co. gained 0.2 percent.
The local currency was trading at 1,381.50 won against the dollar, reflecting an increase of 0.7 won from the previous session.

전날 밤, 다우존스 산업평균지수는 0.96% 하락해 42,514.95를 기록했고, 기술주 중심의 나스닥 종합지수는 1.6% 하락해 18,276.65에 머물렀다.
서울에서는 대형주들이 혼조세를 보였다.
시장 지표인 삼성전자 주가는 2% 하락했으며, 2위 반도체 업체인 SK hynix는 1.5% 낮아졌다. 최고 자동차 제조업체인 현대자동차도 1.5% 감소했으며, 국영 한국가스공사는 1.1% 하락했다.
반면, 주요 상승 주식으로는 선두 배터리 제조업체인 LG 에너지 솔루션이 2.5% 상승하고, 선도 정유업체인 SK 이노베이션 주가는 0.9% 상승했으며, 국적 항공사인 대한항공은 0.2% 상승했다.
원화는 달러 대비 1,381.50원에 거래되며, 이전 거래보다 0.7원 상승했다.
