Seoul shares closed higher on Monday, breaking a three-day losing streak as investors purchased oversold stocks following gains in the US markets. The Korean won fell to its lowest level in over two months against the US dollar.
The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index increased by 11.1 points, or 0.43 percent, finishing at 2,604.92.
Trade volume was moderate, with 235.86 million shares traded, valued at 7.6 trillion won ($5.5 billion). Gainers outnumbered losers, with 434 stocks rising compared to 427 that declined.
Institutions and foreign investors purchased a combined total of 284 billion won, surpassing the 265 billion won in stock selling by individual investors.
On the previous Friday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average increased by 0.09 percent to 43,275.91, while the Nasdaq Composite rose by 0.63 percent to 18,489.55.
Analysts noted that solid economic data from the US helped buoy local stocks, with expectations of further rate cuts by the Federal Reserve also providing a boost to the market.
Large-cap stocks exhibited mixed performance. Hyundai Motor Co. rose by 1 percent to 237,000 won, Korean Air Co. gained 1.9 percent to 23,600 won, LG Chem Ltd. climbed 0.6 percent to 330,500 won, and Jeju Air Co. increased by 2.8 percent to 9,050 won.
Conversely, notable decliners included Samsung Electronics Co., which fell by 0.3 percent to 59,000 won, Samsung Heavy Industries Co. declining by 0.5 percent to 10,000 won, and Hyundai Steel Co. shedding 2 percent to 26,700 won.
At 3:30 p.m., the local currency was trading at 1,375.20 won against the US dollar, a decrease of 5.5 won from the previous session.

미국의 견조한 경제 데이터가 국내 주식에 긍정적인 영향을 미쳤으며, 연방준비제도의 추가 금리인하 기대감도 증시에 힘을 보탰다고 분석가들은 전했다.
대형 주식은 혼조세를 보였다.
현대자동차는 1% 상승하여 237,000원으로 거래되었으며, 대한항공은 1.9% 상승한 23,600원, LG화학은 0.6% 상승한 330,500원, 제주항공은 2.8% 상승한 9,050원으로 마감했다.
하락 종목 중에서는 삼성전자가 0.3% 하락한 59,000원, 삼성중공업이 0.5% 하락한 10,000원, 현대제철이 2% 하락한 26,700원으로 거래됐다.
오후 3시 30분 기준으로 원화는 미국 달러에 대해 1,375.20원으로 거래되며, 전 거래일 대비 5.5원 하락했다.
