This statement was made by Kim Tae-hyo, the South Korean deputy national security director, after a National Security Council meeting held on Tuesday.
Kim indicated that South Korea's response would be adjusted based on North Korea's participation in the war. He remarked, "All weapons, whether defensive or offensive, can be used to kill," and noted that the country might contemplate sending either defensive or offensive weapons if North Korea's actions escalate significantly.
The South Korean official emphasized that further options would be developed as the military alignment between North Korea and Russia evolves. He mentioned, "We are crafting a step-by-step plan to respond to the possible varying degrees of North Korean involvement in the war," but refrained from disclosing specific strategies.
In response, a representative from North Korea's Permanent Mission to the United Nations rejected claims regarding North Korean troop deployments to assist Russia. During a meeting of the UN General Assembly's Disarmament and International Security Committee, the representative described such assertions as "baseless rumors" aimed at damaging North Korea's image and its relations with other sovereign states.
This reaction came after a Ukrainian representative suggested that North Korea might engage in arms deals with Russia and potentially send troops to fight in Ukraine. The South Korean UN Ambassador Hwang Joon-kook also called for an immediate halt to military cooperation between North Korea and Russia, expressing concern over the implications of North Korean troop involvement.
