South Korea's gross domestic product per capita is projected to continue its lead over Japan and Taiwan in 2024, according to data from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
In its "World Economic Outlook," released on Monday, the IMF forecasted South Korea's GDP per capita to rise this year to $36,132, reflecting an increase of 1.6 percent from last year's $35,563.
In contrast, Japan's GDP per capita is expected to decline by 3.1 percent from the previous year to $32,859, while Taiwan is predicted to see an increase of 2.6 percent, reaching $33,234.
The negative outlook for Japan has been attributed to its weak currency and ongoing slow economic growth, as noted by a Bank of Korea official in local media.
South Korea is expected to maintain its lead in GDP per capita through 2025, although the gap between the countries may narrow.
However, in terms of purchasing power, Taiwan is projected to significantly surpass both South Korea and Japan, with a forecasted figure of $79,031 this year.
Purchasing power is determined by adjusting each country's gross domestic product against the exchange rate and consumer prices. For South Korea and Japan, the respective figures for purchasing power are projected to be $62,920 and $53,059.

한국의 1인당 GDP 리드는 2025년에도 계속될 것으로 보이나, 그 격차는 좁혀질 전망이다.
그러나 구매력 측면에서는 대만이 한국과 일본을 크게 초월할 것으로 보이며, 올해 79,031달러에 이를 것으로 예상된다.
구매력은 각국의 국내총생산을 환율과 소비자 물가를 조정하여 계산하며, 한국과 일본의 경우 예상되는 수치는 각각 62,920달러와 53,059달러이다.
