South Korea's gross domestic product per capita is projected to maintain its lead over Japan and Taiwan in 2024, according to data from the International Monetary Fund.
In its "World Economic Outlook," released on Monday, the IMF forecasted that Korea's GDP per capita will rise to $36,132 this year, reflecting an increase of 1.6 percent from last year's figure of $35,563.
In contrast, Japan's GDP per capita is expected to decline by 3.1 percent to $32,859, while Taiwan is projected to see an increase of 2.6 percent, reaching $33,234.
The weak outlook for Japan is attributed to its depreciating currency and ongoing slow economic growth, as noted by a Bank of Korea official in local media.
South Korea is anticipated to maintain its lead in GDP per capita through 2025, although the gap with its neighbors is expected to narrow.
However, in terms of purchasing power, Taiwan is forecasted to significantly surpass both South Korea and Japan, with a projected figure of $79,031 this year.
Purchasing power is calculated by adjusting each country's gross domestic product against exchange rates and consumer prices. For South Korea and Japan, these figures are projected to be $62,920 and $53,059, respectively.

일본의 경우 지난해보다 3.1% 감소한 32,859달러로 예상되며, 대만은 지난해보다 2.6% 증가한 33,234달러를 기록할 것으로 보인다.
일본의 부정적인 전망은 약한 통화와 지속적인 저성장에 영향을 받았다고 한국은행 관계자가 지역 언론에 전했다.
한국의 우세는 2025년에도 지속될 것으로 예상되지만, 격차는 좁혀질 것으로 보인다.
하지만 구매력에서는 대만이 한국과 일본을 훨씬 초과할 것으로 예상되며, 올해 79,031달러에 이를 것으로 보인다.
구매력은 각국의 국내총생산을 환율과 소비자 물가에 맞춰 조정함으로써 계산되며, 한국과 일본의 경우 각각 62,920달러와 53,059달러로 예상된다.
