South Korea's National Security Adviser Shin Won-sik met with Polish Secretary of State and Head of the National Security Bureau Jacek Siewiera on Wednesday at the presidential office in Seoul, where they discussed the growing military ties between North Korea and Russia.
The two officials expressed concerns about the implications of these ties and agreed to enhance security and defense industry cooperation between their nations. This meeting took place ahead of a scheduled summit between South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and Polish President Andrzej Duda.
During their discussions, Shin and Siewiera focused on the security environments in Europe and Asia, particularly regarding North Korea's potential deployment of troops to support Russia in its conflict with Ukraine.
Both parties conveyed "serious concerns" regarding military cooperation between North Korea and Russia and highlighted the importance of coordinated international action to address the escalating security threats.
The officials also reviewed existing collaborations in the defense sector and reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining communication to strengthen bilateral ties.
In 2022, Poland entered into procurement agreements totaling 17 trillion won ($12.4 billion) for the acquisition of K2 tanks, K9 self-propelled howitzers, FA-50 light attack aircraft, and Chunmoo multiple rocket launchers from South Korea, aimed at enhancing its defenses amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Additionally, South Korea has recently finalized a deal to purchase suicide drones from Poland as a countermeasure against North Korea's increasing threats.
