Yoon calls for uncovering truth behind controversial appointment of natl. football coach

President Yoon Suk Yeol has directed the sports ministry to investigate the appointment of the head coach for the South Korean men's national football team and to implement measures to improve transparency in the selection process. This decision was made following a briefing by Culture, Sports and Tourism Minister Yu In-chon on the controversy surrounding the Korea Football Association's choice of Hong Myung-bo as the team's head coach in July. President Yoon emphasized the importance of ensuring a fair and responsible selection process for the national football team, which holds significant importance for the people of South Korea. The ministry is scheduled to release the interim findings of its investigation on Wednesday. The controversy arose during a recent parliamentary session where KFA officials were questioned about bypassing the vetting process to appoint Hong, despite having interviewed foreign candidates over the previous five months. Hong, who previously coached South Korea in the 2014 World Cup, defended the selection process and rejected calls for his resignation.
