Yoon unveils $23m humanitarian aid to Myanmar

During his attendance at the East Asia Summit in Vientiane, Laos, President Yoon Suk Yeol announced plans to provide $23 million in humanitarian aid to Myanmar this year. Yoon emphasized the significance of Myanmar as a testing ground for cooperation among East Asia Summit members, particularly in addressing the humanitarian crisis that has persisted since the military coup in 2021. South Korea aims to quadruple its humanitarian aid from last year's total of $5.6 million, highlighting the need for multilateral collaboration in the region. In addition to his commitment to Myanmar, Yoon also addressed the ongoing war in Ukraine, attributing the prolonged conflict to "illicit military cooperation" between Russia and North Korea, and called for global unity to uphold the rules-based international order. He reiterated his country's commitment to reconstruction efforts in Ukraine and underscored the importance of freedom of navigation and overflight in the South China Sea, aligning with international law as stated in the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
