The Seoul Museum of Art (SeMA) is preparing for a significant year in 2025, with the upcoming openings of two new venues: the Photography Seoul Museum of Art and the Seo-Seoul Museum of Art. These developments will be accompanied by expanded partnerships with institutions in the Middle East and Eastern Europe.
During a press conference, the general director of SeMA announced that the Photography Seoul Museum of Art is scheduled to open in May in the Dobong District, followed by the Seo-Seoul Museum of Art in the latter half of the year in Geumcheon District. This will mark a busy year for the museum.
The Photography Seoul Museum of Art will be Korea’s first public institution dedicated solely to the art and history of photography, featuring a collection of over 20,000 works and archival materials. The Seo-Seoul Museum of Art will focus on media art.
Once opened, these venues will join SeMA’s existing network of six other museums and art spaces throughout the capital. The museum's collaborations with partners in the Middle East will also yield new exhibitions this year.
One of the highlights includes "Layered Medium: We Are in Open Circuits," set to launch in May at the Manarat Al Saadiyat in Abu Dhabi, which will be the largest showcase of Korean contemporary art in the Gulf Cooperation Council region. Additionally, in December, SeMA will co-organize "Intense Proximities" with the Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation, featuring contemporary creatives from the United Arab Emirates.
Other notable exhibitions at SeMA will include a solo presentation of Kang Myong-hi, showcasing her cosmic paintings; a dedicated exhibition for modernist abstract sculptor Chun Kook-kwang; and a group show at the Photography Seoul Museum of Art featuring five influential masters of photography.
In August, the Seoul Mediacity Biennale will return for its 13th edition, curated by Anton Vidokle, Hallie Ayres, and Lukas Brasiskis. This year's biennial will explore artistic practices rooted in occult and spiritual traditions, offering insights into contemporary complexities.
서울시립미술관(SeMA)은 2025년에 Photography 서울미술관과 서서울미술관의 개관을 포함하여 중동 및 동유럽과의 협력관계를 확대하면서 다사다난한 해가 될 예정이다.
“올해는 우리 미술관에 가장 바쁜 해가 될 것입니다”라고 최은주 SeMA 관장은 월요일 기자회견에서 2025년 계획을 발표하며 말했다. “Photography 서울미술관은 5월에 도봉구에서 개관하며, 서서울미술관은 하반기에 금천구에서 개관할 예정입니다.”
Photography 서울미술관은 한국 최초의 공공기관으로서 사진의 예술과 역사를 전담하며, 20,000점 이상의 작품과 아카이브 자료를 소장할 예정이다. 서서울미술관은 미디어 아트에 중점을 두고 큐레이션을 진행할 예정이다.
이 두 장소가 개관하면 SeMA의 6개 다른 박물관 및 예술 공간 네트워크에 합류하게 된다.
미술관은 중동의 기관들과 지속적인 협력을 통해 새로운 전시를 선보일 예정이다.
“Layered Medium: We Are in Open Circuits”는 5월 아부다비의 Manarat Al Saadiyat에서 개최되어 걸프 협력 회의(GCC) 지역에서 최대 규모의 한국 현대 미술 전시가 된다.
한편, SeMA의 주전시관인 서소문 지점에서는 12월에 아부다비 음악 및 예술 재단과 공동 주최로 “Intense Proximities” 전시가 열리며, 아랍에미리트의 1세대에서 3세대 현대 창작자들을 조명할 예정이다.
기타 하이라이트로는 강명희의 솔로 전시가 있으며, 그녀의 신비로운 우주화는 유목 생활과 자연 세계 간의 상호작용을 시적으로 포착하고 있다. 현대 추상 조각가 전국광에 대한 솔로 전시와 Photography 서울미술관 개관 전시도 준비되어 있으며, 이 전시에서는 사진의 주요 거장 다섯 명을 소개할 예정이다.
8월에는 서울 미디어시티 비엔날레가 제13회로 돌아오며, 안톤 비도클, 할리 에이러스, 루카스 브라시키스가 큐레이터로 참여한다. 올해 비엔날레는 신비롭고 Spiritual한 전통에 뿌리를 둔 예술적 관행을 탐구하며 현재의 복잡성을 탐색하는 관점으로서의 기계적인 세안의 메커니즘에 대해 다룰 예정이다.
