Ha-Seong Kim, a Gold Glove-winning free agent infielder, has signed a multiyear contract with the Tampa Bay Rays. According to reports, the deal is for two years and valued at $29 million, including an opt-out clause after the 2025 season.
In the first year of the contract, Kim will earn $13 million, making him the highest-paid player on the Rays. If he does not exercise the opt-out option, the contract will be the fifth-largest free agent deal in the history of the franchise.
Kim, 29, underwent surgery in October to repair a small tear in the labrum of his right shoulder, an injury he sustained during a pickoff attempt. He is expected to miss the Opening Day on March 28, aiming for a return in May.
Previously, Kim played for the San Diego Padres from 2021 to 2024 after transitioning from the Kiwoom Heroes of the Korea Baseball Organization. He signed a four-year, $28 million contract upon his arrival in the MLB.

During the 2024 season, Kim served as the Padres' primary shortstop, following a positional change for former All-Star Xander Bogaerts. However, Kim's performance declined, recording 11 home runs, 47 RBIs, 22 steals, and a .700 OPS in 121 games before his shoulder injury in August ended his season.
After declining an $8 million mutual option, Kim became a free agent and is anticipated to take over as the Rays' everyday shortstop once he returns to play.
With Kim's departure from the National League West, two of his former KBO teammates remain in the region: Lee Jung-hoo, now with the San Francisco Giants, and Kim Hye-seong, who recently signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
This season, the Rays will host their home games at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Florida, as their usual venue, Tropicana Field, sustained significant damage from Hurricane Milton in October and is not projected to be repaired until 2026.
