Korean athletes competing in the upcoming Asian Winter Games held their delegation launch ceremony in Seoul on Friday, vowing to make the country proud with their performances on ice and snow.
The Chinese city of Harbin will host the ninth edition of the Asian Winter Games from February 7 to 14, marking the first Winter Asiad since the 2017 event in Sapporo, Japan.
Sixty-four gold medals will be contested across six sports and 11 disciplines, including alpine skiing, curling, figure skating, short track speed skating, snowboarding, and hockey.
Korea will send a total of 149 athletes and 74 officials to participate in all 11 events.
This year's Asian Winter Games will serve as a precursor to the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy.
"I'd like to congratulate our athletes on the beginning of your great journey. I am looking forward to seeing all of you reap the fruits of your hard work," said the minister of culture, sports and tourism at the start of the ceremony. "I also hope you will set a good example for the rest of Asia with your display of good sportsmanship."
The minister also offered full support from the ministry in expanding the base of winter sports in the country and allowing athletes to focus on their training.
The president of the Korea Ski Snowboard Association and the country's chef de mission to Harbin called on the athletes to uphold the values of fair play. "I hope all of you will feel proud of being part of this competition and accomplish your goals while also displaying the spirit of fair play," he stated, assuring that his staff would assist athletes in competing to the best of their abilities.
In 2017, Korea achieved a record of 16 gold medals and a total of 50 medals, finishing in second place behind Japan in the medal standings.
Among the returning athletes are short tracker Choi Min-jeong, and speed skaters Lee Seung-hoon and Kim Min-sun.

알파인 스키, 컬링, 피겨 스케이팅, 쇼트트랙 스피드 스케이팅, 스노보드, 하키 등 총 6개 종목에서 64개의 금메달이 걸려 있으며, 한국은 모든 11개 종목에 149명의 선수와 74명의 관계자를 파견한다.
올해 아시아冬季게임은 2026년 이탈리아 겨울 올림픽의 전초전 역할을 할 것이다.
유인촌 문화체육관광부 장관은 발대식 시작에서 "선수 여러분의 멋진 여정을 축하드립니다. 여러분의 노력의 결실을 맺는 순간을 기대합니다"라고 전했다. "아시아의 다른 이들에게 좋은 스포츠맨십을 보여 주기를 희망합니다."
유 장관은 또한 겨울 스포츠 기반 확대와 선수들이 훈련에 집중할 수 있도록 부처의 전폭적인 지원을 약속했다.
한국 스키 스노보드 협회 회장이자 하얼빈 대회 한국 단장인 최홍훈은 선수들에게 공정한 경기를 강조하며 "이 대회의 일원이 되어 자부심을 느끼고 자신의 목표를 달성하며 공정한 경기 정신을 보여주길 바란다"고 말했다. "저와 제 직원들은 여러분이 최선을 다해 경쟁할 수 있도록 도울 것입니다."
2017년 한국은 아시아冬季게임에서 16개의 금메달, 총 50개 메달을 따내며 일본에 이어 메달 순위에서 2위를 기록했다.
복귀하는 선수들 중에는 쇼트트랙의 최민정, 스피드 스케이팅의 이승훈과 김민선이 포함되어 있다.
