Low-cost carriers (LCCs) have significantly increased their presence in Korea's aviation market, surpassing the average seating proportion of the Asia-Pacific region, according to a recent industry report.
The analysis by aviation market tracker Center for Aviation indicates that LCCs accounted for 45.7 percent of systemwide seats in Korea, well above the Asia-Pacific average of 32.1 percent as of the second week of January.
For international flights, LCCs' seat proportion from Korea reached 41.1 percent in 2024, a notable rise from 15.4 percent in 2015 and 36.5 percent in 2019.
In domestic aviation, LCCs represented 58.5 percent of seats in 2024, increasing from 54.3 percent in 2019.
Jeju Air, the largest LCC in Korea, held an 11.1 percent share of overall systemwide seats, placing it third behind the national flag carriers, Korean Air and Asiana Airlines.
Following the tragic crash of one of its B737-800 aircraft on December 29, which resulted in 179 fatalities, Jeju Air has reduced its flight capacity. Before the incident, the airline's seat share was slightly higher at 12.4 percent, according to the report.

보고서에 따르면, 한국 최대의 저비용 항공사인 제주항공은 전체 시스템 좌석의 11.1%를 차지하며, 대한항공과 아시아나항공 두 개의 전통적인 대형 항공사에 이어 3위에 올랐습니다.
