The Supreme Prosecutors' Office in Seocho District, Seoul, hosted a national meeting of chief prosecutors on Sunday to discuss the handling of President Yoon Suk Yeol's martial law case, as his detention period approaches its conclusion.
The meeting, led by Prosecutor General Shim Woo-jung, occurred following a Seoul court's rejection of the prosecution's request to extend Yoon's arrest for a second time. Prosecutors had aimed to question Yoon directly if the extension had been granted.
With the detention period set to end on Monday, prosecutors must decide whether to indict Yoon or release him without having conducted direct questioning. According to legal provisions, a suspect must be released if not indicted within the designated detention timeframe. Yoon was detained on January 15 by the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) and was formally arrested on January 19.
Shim is anticipated to make a decision soon based on the outcomes of the meeting. Park Se-hyun, who heads the prosecution's special investigation team, indicated that various opinions were expressed regarding the case's progression.
"The final decision will be made by the prosecutor general after he hears everything," Park stated to reporters after the meeting.
The CIO, which initially investigated Yoon's brief imposition of martial law, transferred the case to the prosecution last week, as it lacks the legal authority to indict a sitting president.

회의는 신우정 검찰총장이 주재했으며, 서울 법원이 윤 대통령의 구속 연장 요청을 두 번째로 기각한 다음 날에 개최되었다. 검찰은 요청이 승인될 경우 윤 대통령을 직접 질문할 계획이었다.
검찰은 이제 윤 대통령을 기소하거나 직접 질문할 기회를 가지지 않고 그를 석방하는 선택에 직면해 있다.
법에 따르면, 피의자가 구속 기간 내에 기소되지 않으면 석방되어야 한다. 윤 대통령의 구속 기간은 고위공직자범죄수사처(CIO)에 의해 1월 15일 구속되었으며, 1월 19일 정식으로 체포되었다.
신 총장은 회의 논의를 바탕으로 조만간 결정을 내릴 것으로 예상된다.
회의 후 특별수사팀을 이끄는 박세현 검사가 기자들에게 사건 진행 방안에 대해 다양한 의견이 있었다고 말했다.
“최종 결정은 검찰총장이 모든 이야기를 들은 후에 내릴 것”이라고 그는 덧붙였다.
CIO는 윤 대통령의 짧은 계엄령 발동에 대한 조사를 주도했으며, 지난주 대통령을 기소할 법적 권한이 없어 사건을 검찰에 이송했다.
