Heavy snow blanketed Korea for the second consecutive day Tuesday, disrupting transportation services and causing traffic congestion as people traveled to their hometowns for the Lunar New Year holiday.
As of 4 p.m., 130 centimeters of snow had accumulated on Mount Halla on Jeju Island since Monday. Some counties in Gangwon Province saw up to 40 cm, while Anseong and Pyeongtaek in Gyeonggi Province received about 25 cm. In Seoul, the Gwanak ward recorded 13.7 cm of snow.
The Korea Meteorological Administration forecasts an additional 5 to 15 cm of snow in mountainous areas of Jeju and about 5 to 10 cm in Chungcheong and Jeolla provinces for Wednesday.
Cold wave warnings have been issued in several regions, with morning lows expected to drop to minus 15 degrees Celsius in parts of Gangwon Province.
On Tuesday, the heavy snow resulted in car accidents nationwide, and a light-rail train service in Yongin, south of Seoul, was disrupted for 2.5 hours. Vehicle movement was slow on the Gyeongbu Expressway near Suwon Singal IC.
In Jeju, major roads on Mount Halla were completely closed. As of 11 a.m., a total of 111 flights had been canceled, including 68 departing from Incheon International Airport, according to the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters.
Additionally, fishing vessels and passenger ships connecting islands to mainland ports were suspended, causing further travel inconvenience. Some KTX high-speed train services operated at reduced speeds for passenger safety amid the severe weather.
The affected train lines included Gyeongbu, Honam, Gangneung, and central services, according to the railway operator. Authorities also cordoned off the entrances to 20 national parks nationwide for safety reasons.

국립 공원 20곳의 출입구도 안전을 위해 봉쇄되었다고 관계자들이 전했다.
