Korea and Australia have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to establish a green shipping route, with plans for trial operations in the first half of 2029, according to officials on Monday.
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries announced that the agreement was finalized after Korean Minister Kang Do-hyung signed the document in Seoul. The MOU was initially signed by Australian Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, and Local Government Catherine King and was later delivered to Korea by Australian Ambassador to Korea Jeffrey Robinson.
This agreement aims to enhance cooperation in several areas, including the establishment of a green shipping route, collaborative efforts to address eco-friendly shipping issues within the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and the promotion of alternative clean fuels. Both countries have also committed to facilitating exchanges among related organizations.
A preliminary feasibility study for the green shipping route is set to commence in the first half of this year.
한국과 호주가 2029년 상반기 시험 운영을 목표로 하는 친환경 해운 노선 구축을 위한 양해각서(MOU)를 체결했다고 월요일 관계자들이 전했다.
해양수산부에 따르면, 이 협정은 한국의 강도형 장관이 서울에서 서명한 후 최종 확정되었으며, 호주의 인프라, 교통, 지역 발전 및 지방 정부 장관인 캐서린 킹이 이전에 MOU에 서명한 후 호주 대사 제프리 로빈슨을 통해 한국에 전달되었다.
이번 협정은 친환경 해운 노선 구축, 국제해사기구(IMO) 내 친환경 해운 문제에 대한 공동 대응, 대체 청정연료의 공급 및 활용 촉진 등 여러 분야에서 협력 증진을 목표로 하고 있다. 양국은 또한 관련 기관 간의 교류를 촉진할 것을 약속했다.
친환경 해운 노선에 대한 예비 타당성 조사가 올해 상반기 시작될 예정이다.
