An opposition lawmaker was fined 3 million won ($2,084) by a court on Wednesday, a sentence that could potentially result in the loss of his seat in the National Assembly if upheld.
The Suwon District Court issued the fine to Rep. Lee Sang-sik of the main opposition Democratic Party of Korea for violating the Public Official Election Act.
Lee was accused of making a false statement regarding his assets during his parliamentary election campaign last April.
According to the law, a lawmaker will forfeit their seat if a fine exceeding 1 million won for violating election law is finalized.
Following the ruling, Lee expressed respect for the court's decision but indicated plans to appeal.

법에 따르면, 선거법 위반으로 100만 원 이상의 벌금이 확정될 경우 의원은 자신의 의석을 잃게 된다.
판결 이후 이 의원은 기자들에게 법원의 결정을 존중하나, 항소할 것이라고 밝혔다.
