Three national flags for South Korea, the Taegeukgis, were displayed during the medal ceremony for the women's 500-meter short track speed skating event at the Asian Winter Games at Heilongjiang Ice Events Training Center Multifunctional Hall in Harbin, China, on February 8. Choi Min-jeong, Kim Gil-li, and Lee So-yeon secured the gold, silver, and bronze medals, respectively, achieving a podium sweep for South Korea.
South Korea arrived in Harbin this month aiming to win at least 11 gold medals at the Asian Winter Games. The country made significant progress on the first day of the medal race, capturing seven gold medals across ice and snow events.
Short track speed skaters contributed greatly by winning four out of five available gold medals at the Heilongjiang Ice Events Training Center. The day began with a victory in the mixed 2,000-meter relay gold medal event, followed by individual wins from relay team members, including Kim Gil-li and Park Ji-won in the women's and men's 1,500-meter events. Choi Min-jeong led the South Korean sweep in the women's 500-meter event, with Kim and Lee finishing in second and third places.
In addition, Park earned a silver medal in the men's 500-meter, while Jang Sung-woo secured bronze in both the men's 500-meter and 1,500-meter events.
In a separate competition at the adjacent oval, Lee Na-hyun narrowly defeated teammate Kim Min-sun to win gold in the inaugural women's 100-meter speed skating event, finishing with a time of 10.501 seconds, while Kim finished at 10.505 seconds. Kim Jun-ho also won bronze in the men's 100-meter event earlier that day.
At Yabuli Ski Resort, around 200 kilometers southeast of Harbin, two South Korean teenagers won gold medals in freestyle skiing events. Lee Seung-hun, 19, achieved gold in the men's halfpipe event with 97.50 points, while teammate Moon Hee-sung earned bronze with 88.50 points. Jang Yu-jin also secured bronze in the women's halfpipe.
Lee Seung-hun made history as the first South Korean to win an Asiad gold in any freestyle skiing category. In snowboarding, 18-year-old Lee Chae-un clinched the gold medal in the men's slopestyle event with 90.00 points, while another South Korean, Kang Dong-hun, took bronze with 74.00 points.
Lee Chae-un, who recently won a world title in halfpipe, had initially not planned to participate in the slopestyle at the Asiad before deciding to compete at the last minute. He aims to win a second gold medal in the halfpipe, with qualification runs scheduled for next Wednesday.
On the same day, Kim Kyeong-ae and Seong Ji-hoon earned silver in the mixed doubles curling event, and Gim So-hui took silver in the women's alpine skiing slalom event. With a total of seven gold, five silver, and seven bronze medals, South Korea ranks second in the medal table, trailing behind China, which collected eight gold, eight silver, and four bronze medals on Saturday.

첫 메달 레이스가 시작된 토요일에 한국 선수들은 얼음과 눈에서 7개의 금메달을 획득하며 그 목표에 큰 진전을 이뤘다.
쇼트트랙 스피드 스케이팅 선수들이 5개의 금메달 중 4개를 차지하며 큰 역할을 했다.
우선 혼합 2,000미터 계주에서 금메달을 차지하며 순조로운 하루가 시작됐다. 계주팀의 두 멤버인 김길리와 박지원은 각각 여성 1,500미터와 남성 1,500미터 금메달을 획득했다. 또 다른 계주팀 멤버 최민정은 여성 500미터에서 한국의 메달 독식을 이끌었고, 김길리와 이소연이 그 뒤를 이었다.
박지원은 남성 500미터에서 은메달을 추가하며 한국이 토요일에 쇼트트랙 금메달 독식을 하지 못한 것을 아쉬워했다. 장성우는 남성 500미터와 1,500미터에서 동메달을 획득했다.
인접한 경기장에서 이나현은 동료 김민선과의 치열한 경쟁 끝에 첫 여성 100미터 스피드 스케이팅 금메달을 차지했다. 이나현은 10.501초를 기록하며 금메달을, 김민선은 10.505초로 뒤를 이었다.
또한 이날 아침 김준호는 남성 100미터에서 동메달을 획득했다.
야부리 스키 리조트에서는 약 200킬로미터 남동쪽에서 두 명의 한국 10대 청소년이 금메달을 따냈다. 19세의 이승훈은 남자 자유형 스키 하프파이프에서 97.50점을 기록하며 금메달을, 팀 동료 문희성이 88.50점으로 동메달을 차지했다. 장유진은 여성 하프파이프에서 동메달을 획득했다.
이승훈은 아시안 게임 자유형 스키 이벤트에서 금메달을 획득한 첫 한국선수였다.
스노보드에서 18세의 이채은은 남자 슬로프스타일에서 90.00점을 기록하며 금메달을, 또 다른 한국 선수인 강동훈은 74.00점으로 동메달을 차지했다.
이채은은 17세 생일 한 달 전 하프파이프 세계 타이틀을 차지했으며, 아시안 게임 슬로프스타일 이벤트에 처음에는 출전하지 않으려다 마지막 순간에 마음을 바꿨다.
이채은은 다음 수요일에 있을 예선 통과 후, 다음 날 열리는 결승에서 두 번째 금메달에 도전할 예정이다.
토요일에는 김경애와 성지원이 혼합복식 컬링 이벤트에서 은메달을 팀워크로 거머쥐었고, 김소희는 여성 알파인 스키 슬라롬에서 은메달을 차지했다.
현재 한국은 금 7개, 은 5개, 동 7개를 차지하며 메달 순위 2위에 올라있고, 주최국인 중국은 금 8개, 은 8개, 동 4개를 획득했다.
