Actor Lee Joo-shil, known for her role in Netflix's global hit "Squid Game," has passed away at the age of 81 due to stomach cancer, as reported by her agency on Sunday.
Lee was diagnosed with the illness three months prior and was admitted to a hospital in Uijeongbu, north of Seoul, earlier that day after experiencing cardiac arrest. She was pronounced dead shortly after her arrival.
Lee Joo-shil made her debut in 1965 as a theatrical actress and became a significant figure in Korea's theater scene, starring in numerous acclaimed productions throughout her career.
In 1993, she was diagnosed with breast cancer but successfully battled the disease, making a full recovery after a decade.
Despite facing health challenges, Lee remained active in her career, expanding her work into television and film. She also earned a doctorate in public health from Wonkwang University.
Her most recent role was as the mother of former police officer Hwang Jun-ho, portrayed by Wi Ha-jun, in "Squid Game" Season 2.
A funeral service for Lee Joo-shil is scheduled to take place on February 5 at Severance Hospital in Sinchon, Seoul.

최근에는 넷플릭스의 글로벌 히트작 "오징어 게임" 시즌 2에서 위하준이 연기한 전 경찰관 황준호의 어머니 역할을 맡았다.
장례식은 서울 신촌 세브란스 병원에서 2월 5일에 진행될 예정이다.
