Prosecutors have dropped charges against Kim Jung-sook, the wife of former President Moon Jae-in, related to her solo trip to India and her handling of a Chanel jacket during a state visit to France.
Kim faced accusations of abuse of power and misappropriation of state funds, specifically for allegedly wasting 400 million won ($276,336) on her trip to the Taj Mahal in 2018 and for purportedly retaining a Chanel jacket that she wore on loan during the visit to Paris the same year.
The Seoul Central District Prosecutors Office stated that there was insufficient evidence to support the claims regarding both incidents.
"We have cleared the accused of all charges after determining the factual relations through questioning multiple people and securing documents, and reviewing the legality of the case," the prosecution explained.
Regarding the trip to India, prosecutors noted that it could not be classified as personal, as the Indian government had repeatedly requested the attendance of a South Korean high-level delegation at the Diwali festival of lights.
Concerning the Chanel jacket, the prosecution found "no evidence" indicating that Kim kept the jacket or used state funds for it, affirming that it was returned to the fashion house immediately after the visit.

서울중앙지검은 양 사건에 대한 혐의를 입증할 만한 충분한 증거가 없었다고 밝혔다.
검찰 측은 “다수의 참고인을 심문하고 관련 서류를 확보한 후 사실관계를 확인하고 사건의 합법성을 검토한 결과, 피고에 대한 모든 혐의를 무죄로 판단했다”고 말했다.
검찰은 김정숙의 인도 여행이 개인적인 여행으로 볼 수 없다고 설명했으며, 당시 인도 정부가 한국 대통령 또는 고위급 대표단의 참석을 여러 차례 요청했기 때문이라고 밝혔다.
샤넬 재킷에 대한 혐의와 관련해서는, 전직 영부인이 재킷을 보관하거나 이를 착용하기 위해 공적 자금을 사용했다는 증거가 없으며, 방문 후 즉시 패션 하우스로 반환되었다고 전했다.
