Director Yoon Sung-hyun discussed his upcoming zombie drama "Newtopia" at a press conference in Seoul, expressing confidence that the series will attract international viewers who appreciate a lighter take on the zombie genre, combining elements of humor with horror.
According to Yoon, many fans worldwide are familiar with the more comedic aspects of zombie narratives. He noted that "Newtopia" incorporates elements reminiscent of classic zombie films, aiming to evoke a sense of nostalgia for viewers who enjoy such blends of humor and horror.
The eight-part series is set to premiere on the Korean streaming platform Coupang Play and will also be accessible globally via Amazon's Prime Video starting Friday.
"Newtopia" follows the story of Jae-yoon, a soldier, and his girlfriend Young-joo, portrayed by Jisoo, as they navigate a zombie-infested Seoul in their quest to find each other.
Yoon commented on the appeal of the series to zombie enthusiasts, mentioning the presence of traditional zombie characteristics, including zombies devoid of eyeballs and with missing body parts. He also highlighted the potential draw for fans of both Jisoo and co-star Park Jeong-min.
The director expressed gratitude for Jisoo's involvement, noting that her comedic talent was essential for the character of Young-joo. He praised her ability to handle physically demanding action scenes effectively.
Additionally, the series features a plane crash and a government declaration of martial law in the wake of a zombie outbreak, which Yoon found strikingly similar to recent real-life events in Korea. He noted that these parallels were unexpected, as they occurred after the series' post-production had been completed.
Yoon encouraged viewers, both in Korea and abroad, to pay attention to the unpredictable decisions made by the characters throughout the series. He emphasized the freshness brought by these choices and highlighted the return of the slower, grotesque traits of zombies reminiscent of films from the 1970s and 1980s, contrasting them with contemporary portrayals.

그는 K-pop 그룹 BLACKPINK의 멤버인 지수를 칭찬하며, 그녀 없이는 작품이 완료되지 않았을 것이라고 전했다.
"지수와 함께 작업하게 되어 행운이라고 느꼈다. 영주 캐릭터는 지수 없이는 표현할 수 없었을 것이라고 생각한다. 캐릭터를 유머러스하게 표현해야 하는 부분이 있었는데, 지수는 매우 유머러스한 배우여서 잘 어울렸다"고 말했다.
또한 "신체적으로 도전적인 액션 장면도 많았는데, 그녀가 이러한 장면들을 조용히 잘 소화해준 것에 대해 매우 감사하게 생각한다"고 덧붙였다.
우연히도 이 시리즈에는 비행기 추락 장면과 좀비 발생 이후의 계엄령 선언 장면이 포함되어 있어 최근 한국에서의 사건들과의 유사성으로 주목받을 것으로 예상된다.
이에 대해 윤 감독은 이러한 유사성에 놀랐다고 밝혔으며, 실생활 사건이 후반 작업이 끝난 뒤에 발생했음을 언급했다.
"편집이 끝난 후에 실제로 계엄령이 선언되었을 때 저도 놀랐다. 저는 오직 대본에 충실하게 전달했을 뿐"이라고 말했다. "시리즈의 시작을 나타내는 핵심 장면들을 보존하는 것이 중요하다고 생각했기 때문에 그대로 두기로 했다"고 덧붙였다.
한국과 국제 관객에게 그는 시리즈 전반에 걸쳐 등장인물들이 내리는 예측할 수 없는 선택에 주목해 달라고 요청했다.
"등장인물들이 어떤 선택을 할지, 그들이 어떻게 나아갈지에 대한 예상치 못한 부분이 많아서 캐릭터에 신선함이 있다. 좀비들은 1970년대와 1980년대에 제가 보았던 빈티지 좀비 영화와 유사한 기괴하고 느리게 움직이는 특징을 보여준다며, 오늘날의 좀비와는 다르다"고 설명했다.
