Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul is set to travel to South Africa later this week to attend the foreign ministers' meeting of the Group of 20 nations, as announced by his office on Monday. His participation in the two-day gathering in Johannesburg, starting Thursday, has prompted interest regarding a possible meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
Cho will depart on Tuesday, with plans for bilateral talks with some of the other participating countries on the sidelines of the meeting, according to a foreign ministry official.
The potential meeting with Wang is particularly noteworthy, as it would be the first discussions between the two ministers since the political crisis in Korea that arose from the now-impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol's attempt to declare martial law.
This meeting would also follow Cho's recent discussions with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, along with their trilateral meeting with Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya in Germany the previous week.
However, diplomatic sources suggest that the likelihood of a meeting between Cho and Wang may be low, as there is speculation that Wang could visit Korea either before or after attending a trilateral meeting in Japan with Cho and Iwaya next month.
