GS Arts Center is set to open in April, revitalizing a venue that has been significant in Korea’s performing arts landscape. The American Ballet Theatre (ABT) will headline the opening festival, marking its return to Korea after 13 years.
Located at GS Tower in Yeoksam-dong, southern Seoul’s Gangnam District, the venue previously operated as LG Arts Center for 22 years until LG relocated in 2022. The ownership change followed a corporate split between LG Group and GS Group in 2004, and there had been speculation about the venue's future use. Instead, GS Group has chosen to focus on cultural contributions.
"GS Arts Center is part of GS Group’s social contribution efforts, marking our 20th anniversary," said Park Sun-hee, CEO of GS Cultural Foundation, at a Tuesday press conference. The new name honors its predecessor, LG Arts Center, known for influencing Korea’s performing arts.
The GS Cultural Foundation, established in 2024, aims to highlight the arts' importance. The venue has retained its core structure but has seen substantial upgrades, including a new lobby, an increase in seating capacity from 1,100 to 1,200, and improved backstage facilities.
For its inaugural performance, ABT will present a mix of classical and contemporary works, featuring pieces such as "Theme and Variations" by George Balanchine and "In the Upper Room" by Twyla Tharp. Notably, the lineup includes Korean dancers Seo Hee, Ahn Joo-won, Park Sun-mi, and Han Sung-woo.
The center's inaugural Artists Series will feature two esteemed international artists. South African artist William Kentridge will present his works on May 9 and 10, and later on May 30, he will showcase an animated film with music from the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra. Spanish choreographer Marcos Morau will present a series of contemporary dance pieces, highlighting themes from Spanish flamenco and human emotions in an artificial environment.
Park emphasized the center's focus on "borderless" and "curious" artistic directions, aiming to attract diverse audiences beyond traditional theatergoers.
The inaugural season will also include performances by the Korean National Ballet and the Seoul Jazz Festival, featuring notable events such as "The Kylian Project" and concerts by prominent jazz musicians set to take place in May and June.
Additionally, GS Arts Center will host major productions, including the Korean premiere of the Broadway musical "The Great Gatsby" in July, followed by the West End adaptation of "Life of Pi" in November.

극장은 서울 강남구 역삼동 GS 타워에 위치해 있으며, 2000년부터 22년간 LG 아츠 센터로 운영되었다. 그러나 LG가 2022년 마곡동으로 장소를 이전하면서 역삼 극장의 운명은 불확실해졌다. 장소의 소유권 변화는 2004년 LG 그룹과 GS 그룹의 분할로 인해 발생했으며, 이후 GS 타워는 GS의 자산이 되었다. prime 위치에도 불구하고 상업용으로 변모할 것이라는 추측이 있었으나 GS 그룹은 문화 기여에 전념하기로 결정했다.
GS 문화 재단의 박선희 CEO는 GS 타워에서 열린 기자 회견에서 "GS 아츠 센터는 GS 그룹의 사회 공헌 노력의 일환으로, 우리의 20주년을 기념한다"고 강조했다. "새로운 이름은 한국 공연 예술 씬 형성에 중추적인 역할을 했던 LG 아츠 센터를 기리는 의미가 있다"고 덧붙였다.
GS 문화 재단은 GS 그룹의 예술의 힘에 대한 신념을 바탕으로 이 이니셔티브를 이끌기 위해 2024년에 설립되었으며, 극장의 핵심 구조는 유지되지만 로비 리모델링, 좌석 수 증가(1,100석에서 1,200석으로) 및 아티스트를 위한 백스테이지 시설 개선이 이뤄졌다.
개막 공연에는 세계 최고의 발레단 중 하나인 ABT가 참여하여 조지 발란신의 "Theme and Variations", 트와일라 타프의 "In the Upper Room", 제마 본드의 "La Boutique" 및 카일 아브라함의 "Mercurial Son" 등 클래식과 현대 레퍼토리를 선보일 예정이다.
박 CEO는 "세계 최고의 발레단 중 하나로 개막을 알리고 싶었다"고 설명했다. ABT의 라인업에는 한국 무용수들이 포함되며, 수석 무용수인 서희와 안주원, 솔리스트 박선미와 한성우가 출연한다.
GS 아츠 센터의 비전 핵심에는 아티스트 시리즈가 자리 잡고 있다. 장르를 넘나드는 경계를 허무는 아티스트들을 소개하기 위해 다국적 예술가 두 명이 첫번째 라인업에 포함되었다.
남아프리카 아티스트인 윌리엄 켄트리지는 5월 9일과 10일에 "Sibyl"을 선보이며, "The Moment Has Gone"은 라이브 음악과 함께하는 단편 영화로, "Waiting for the Sibyl"은 시각적으로 감동적인 챔버 오페라로 구성된다. 또한 5월 30일 서울필하모닉 오케스트라와 함께 쇼스타코비치 교향곡 10번에 맞춰 "Oh To Believe in Another World"라는 애니메이션 영화를 선보인다.
스페인 안무가 마르코스 모라우는 스페인 플라멘코에 대한 존경을 담은 "Afanador", 인공지능 세계에서 인간 감정을 탐구하는 "Pasionaria", 중세 춤 의식을 설치 작품과 비디오, 라이브 공연으로 재구성한 "Totentanz"를 선보일 예정이다.
박 CEO는 기자 회견에서 GS 아츠 센터의 예술 방향으로 "경계 없는"과 "호기심 많은"을 강조하며, "아티스트 시리즈는 관객의 확대에 관한 것"이라고 밝혔다. "전시, 여행, 미식 등을 즐기는 사람들이 흥미를 느낄 수 있는 혁신적인 작품을 제공하고자 한다"고 덧붙였다.
첫 시즌에서 국제적인 인물들이 중심을 이루지만, 박 CEO는 향후 한국의 뛰어난 아티스트들을 초청할 계획도 암시했다.
GS 아츠 센터는 한국국립발레단(KNB) 및 서울재즈페스티벌과 협력하여 존재감을 더욱 확립할 계획이다.
KNB의 "The Kylian Project"는 6월 26일에서 29일 사이에 체코 안무가 지리 필리안의 초기 작품들인 "Forgotten Land", "Falling Angels" 및 "Sechs Tanze"를 선보인다.
서울재즈페스티벌은 5월 20일 브래드 멘들라우, 크리스찬 맥브라이드, 마커스 길모어의 콘서트를 시작으로, 5월 23일부터 25일까지 패트 메센지의 "Dream Box/MoonDial Tour" 공연이 이어진다. 이러한 공연은 5월 30일부터 6월 1일까지 열리는 페스티벌의 야외 버전에 앞서 GS 아츠 센터를 다양한 문화 허브로 자리매김할 예정이다.
GS 아츠 센터는 큐레이팅된 프로그램 외에도 주요 프로덕션을 선보일 계획이다. 브로드웨이 뮤지컬 "The Great Gatsby"는 신춘수에 의해 제작되어 7월에 한국 초연되며, 이어서 11월에는 얀 마르텔의 소설을 각색한 웨스트엔드 작품 "Life of Pi"가 상연될 예정이다.
