GS Group is intensifying its initiatives to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computing technologies into its operations. The ninth-largest business group in the nation held an AI and digital council meeting at its Seoul headquarters, attended by Chairman Huh Tae-soo and approximately 80 executives, including CEOs of its affiliates.
This gathering was the first of its kind since the beginning of the year, highlighting the group's commitment to leveraging innovative technologies. The executives reached a consensus on the importance of using AI and digital technologies to enhance business operations and discussed strategies to prepare for advancements in quantum computing.
Chairman Huh emphasized the potential for creating new value through effective data management and AI technology, stating, "Although we do not develop products like AI chips, we will become the winner, if we create new values through well-management of our data and use of AI technology for business transformation."
During the meeting, energy affiliates GS Power and GS E&R shared their experiences in utilizing AI. GS Power presented a platform that gathers data from managed power plants, indicating the potential for machine learning applications. Meanwhile, GS E&R showcased a predictive system for wind power generation, which analyzes various meteorological parameters to improve accuracy.
Additionally, the group invited CEO Yune Ji-won of SDT, a startup focused on quantum computing, to discuss opportunities for incorporating quantum technology within the organization. A GS Group official noted that executives recognized the transformative potential of quantum computing, viewing its commercialization as a catalyst for industry-wide innovation.
Given GS Group's involvement in diverse sectors such as oil refining, petrochemicals, power generation, and construction, there was a collective agreement on the necessity of a "quantum transformation" to stay competitive in the evolving market landscape.

국내에서 아홉 번째로 큰 기업 그룹인 GS 그룹은 일요일에 허태수 회장과 그룹 계열사의 CEO를 포함한 약 80명의 임원들이 서울 본사에서 열린 AI 및 디지털 자문 회의에 참석해 미래 전략을 논의했다고 밝혔다.
이는 올해 초 회의 이후 그룹의 최고 경영자들이 처음으로 모인 것이다.
GS 그룹은 임원들이 업무 및 비즈니스 방식을 개선하기 위해 AI 및 디지털 기술 활용의 필요성에 동의하고 양자 컴퓨팅과 같은 혁신 기술 시대에 대비하는 방안에 대해 논의했다고 전했다.
허 회장은 "AI 칩과 같은 제품은 개발하지 않지만, 데이터를 잘 관리하고 비즈니스 혁신을 위한 AI 기술을 활용해 새로운 가치를 창출한다면 우리는 승자가 될 것"이라고 말했다.
콘글로머릿은 GS 전력과 GS E&R이라는 두 개의 에너지 계열사가 각각의 사업에서 AI 기술을 어떻게 활용하고 있는지를 보여주는 발표를 했다고 밝혔다.
GS 전력의 한 관계자는 "GS 전력은 감독하는 발전소의 데이터를 보여주는 플랫폼을 구축해 수집한 데이터를 활용해 기계 학습을 사용할 가능성을 높이고 있다"고 말했다.
그는 "GS E&R은 산지의 특성과 풍속, 온도, 기압 등의 다양한 기상 변수 분석을 통해 바람 발전량을 보다 정확하게 예측하는 자체 시스템을 개발했다"고 덧붙였다.
또한, GS 그룹은 양자 컴퓨팅 전문 스타트업 SDT의 유너 지원 CEO에게 자문 회의에서 강의를 요청해 양자 역학 기반 컴퓨팅 기술을 활용할 수 있는 분야를 파악하고자 했다.
GS 그룹 관계자는 "임원들은 양자 컴퓨팅의 상용화가 산업 전반의 혁신을 가져올 게임 체인저가 될 것이라는 데 동의했다"고 말했다.
그는 "우리 그룹이 석유 정제, 석유화학, 발전 및 건설에 참여하고 있어 '양자 혁신'의 필요성에 대해서도 임원들 간에 의견이 일치했다"고 덧붙였다.
