Korea's industry minister expressed confidence that Seoul and Washington will reach a "constructive" and "win-win" alternative as the U.S. administration seeks to impose "reciprocal" tariffs on American imports to equalize trade conditions with other nations.
Industry Minister Ahn Duk-geun made these comments upon his arrival in the United States for discussions with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. The talks will focus on the U.S. plans to impose tariffs and examine bilateral cooperation in sectors such as shipbuilding, cutting-edge industries, and energy.
This visit marks the first time a South Korean minister has traveled to Washington since President Donald Trump's administration began. Concerns are growing over Trump's proposals for a 25 percent tariff on all steel and aluminum imports, alongside plans for additional tariffs on automobiles, semiconductors, and pharmaceuticals.
Ahn indicated that he believes constructive alternatives can be developed through consultations with U.S. officials. He highlighted the existing Korea-U.S. free trade agreement (FTA) as a framework through which many issues, including non-tariff barriers, have already been addressed.
In response to queries regarding the Trump administration's plans for reciprocal tariffs, which would be tailored based on various economic factors, Ahn emphasized that his visit aims to protect Korean businesses and strengthen strategic industrial partnerships.
He noted a sense of responsibility regarding the impact of U.S. tariff policies on Korean industries, which have been attentive to these developments. Ahn expressed optimism about formulating a beneficial solution similar to past collaborations, such as those related to the Inflation Reduction Act.
Furthermore, Ahn stated that this round of negotiations is not a terminal discussion and that he looks forward to ongoing dialogues to establish a robust industrial ecosystem in advanced technologies and enhance the bilateral relationship.
He also mentioned energy cooperation, suggesting that Korea is willing to increase its import of U.S. energy to diversify its energy sources and enhance energy security.

안 장관은 "미국 측과 구체적인 협의를 진행할 때 여러 오해를 해소하고 건설적인 대안을 만들 수 있다고 믿는다"고 언급했다.
그는 "우리나라는 일반적으로 한미 자유무역협정(FTA)을 가지고 있으며 비관세 장벽을 포함한 대부분의 문제는 과거 FTA 재협상 과정에서 해결됐다"고 덧붙였다.
트럼프 행정부의 상반된 관세 맞춤 발표에 대한 질문에 응답한 안 장관은 이러한 조치가 무역 파트너의 관세, 비관세 장벽, 환율 정책, "불공정하고 차별적 또는 외부적인" 세금 등을 바탕으로 맞춤화될 것이라고 설명했다.
안 장관은 이번 방문이 한국 기업을 보호하고 전략 산업 분야에서 양국 간 파트너십을 심화하기 위한 "최선의" 옵션을 찾는 데 목적이 있다고 강조했다.
그는 "(트럼프의 관세 정책은) 국가의 중대한 이익과 관련된 문제이기 때문에 한국 산업이 큰 관심을 기울이고 있다"며 "인플레이션 감축법에 대응했던 경험을 통해 앞으로 미국 정부와의 논의를 통해 건설적이고 윈-윈 할 대안을 마련할 수 있을 것이라고 믿는다"고 말했다.
안 장관은 이번 미국과의 협상이 마지막이 아닐 것이라고도 언급하며 "좋은 기회를 만들어 나가면서 미국과 함께 첨단 기술 분야의 산업 생태계를 형성하고, 양국 산업의 성장을 공동으로 촉진할 수 있는 좋은 기회를 만들겠다"고 강조했다.
그는 루트닉과의 회담에서 양국 간 새로운 산업 협력 플랫폼을 설립하는 방안도 논의한다고 밝혔다.
또한 그는 미국과의 에너지 협력에 대해 언급하며 "많은 국가들이 유사한 상황에서 미국의 에너지 수출을 확대하는 이야기를 하고 있다"며 "한국도 에너지 수입원 다양화와 에너지 안보 측면에서 상호 이익이 되는 다양한 분야를 적극 고려할 계획이다"고 말했다.
