Korean short track speed skater Jang Sung-woo won a bronze medal in the men's 1,000 meters at the International Skating Union's World Tour event held at the Milano Ice Skating Arena in Milan, Italy, on February 16. This event marked the conclusion of the revamped World Tour season.
Jang secured third place in the final stop of the World Tour, after previously earning a bronze in the men's 1,500 meters the day before. He was the only Korean athlete to win a medal during the two-day competition in Italy, as the team did not earn medals in the women's 3,000 meters relay or the men's 5,000 meters relay.
The national team faced a demanding schedule, having competed at the Asian Winter Games in Harbin, China, from February 7 to 9, returning to Korea on February 12, and then traveling to Italy for the World Tour event.
The competition served as an official Olympic test event, with the Milano Ice Skating Arena set to host short track races during the 2026 Winter Olympics. The team aimed to provide its prospective Olympic skaters with experience in a high-stakes environment.
Korean athletes struggled to contend for the Crystal Globe, awarded to the overall points leaders at the end of the World Tour season. They missed the fifth leg of the tour in the Netherlands due to a scheduling conflict with the Asian Winter Games and faced challenges at the final event in Italy.
Park Ji-won, a two-time defending Crystal Globe winner, finished sixth, alongside Kim Gil-li, the 2024 women's winner, who also placed sixth.
Looking ahead, the Korean team is preparing for the world championships scheduled for March 14-16 in Beijing. The top male and female skaters with at least one gold medal at the championships will secure automatic berths on the national team for the 2025-2026 season, which includes the Olympics. Remaining spots will be determined through competitive national trials, with no guarantee that medalists from the Asian Winter Games will return for the Olympic season.
