The Korean Film Council (KOFIC) and the Saudi Film Commission (SFC) have initiated an executive collaboration program aimed at enhancing cooperation in the film sector, fostering cultural exchange, and promoting growth within the film industries of both countries, as announced on Friday.
This partnership builds on a memorandum of understanding signed in 2019 and seeks to accelerate knowledge-sharing, production cooperation, talent development, and technological innovation in the film industry.
The agreement underscores the commitment of both parties to support filmmakers and create more international opportunities for creative professionals.
As part of the collaboration, KOFIC and SFC will jointly organize training and development programs, workshops, masterclasses, and mentorship opportunities led by industry experts. These initiatives aim to enhance the expertise of filmmakers in areas such as production, animation, screenwriting, and directing.
The partnership also promotes greater collaboration in film production, encouraging co-development and co-production projects between filmmakers from both countries.
To facilitate these efforts, the organizations will arrange industry networking events, including meetings at major film festivals such as the Busan International Film Festival and the Red Sea International Film Festival, which was launched in Saudi Arabia in 2019.
Additionally, the agreement focuses on expanding the distribution and promotion of Korean and Saudi films through support for screenings, cultural exchanges, and festival programming that highlights the creative talents of both nations.
The partnership emphasizes knowledge-sharing in film policy and regulatory frameworks, as well as collaboration on advancements in film technology and innovation, particularly in artificial intelligence (AI) and digital production techniques.
Han Sang-jun, chair of KOFIC, expressed optimism about the collaboration, stating that previous partnerships, including a boot camp with MBC Academy in Saudi Arabia last November, have laid a strong foundation for future exchanges.
Abdullah Al Qahtani, CEO of the SFC, described the partnership as a milestone in efforts to elevate Saudi Arabia's film industry and strengthen its connections with global markets, highlighting the dynamic nature of South Korea's film sector and the potential for creating more opportunities for filmmakers in both countries.

이번 협정의 일환으로 두 기관은 산업 전문가들이 이끄는 교육 및 개발 프로그램, 워크숍, 마스터 클래스, 멘토십 기회를 공동으로 조직할 예정이다. 이러한 이니셔티브는 양국 영화 제작자들이 제작, 애니메이션, 각본 및 감독 분야에서 전문성을 향상시킬 수 있도록 돕는다.
또한 이 파트너십은 영화 제작에서의 협력을 증대시켜 양국 대면 작가들 간의 공동 개발 및 공동 제작 프로젝트를 촉진한다.
이러한 노력을 돕기 위해 두 기관은 부산 국제 영화제, 2019년에 시작된 사우디 아라비아의 레드 시 국제 영화제와 같은 주요 영화제에서 네트워킹 이벤트를 마련할 예정이다.
더욱이, 이번 협정은 한국 영화와 사우디 영화의 배급 및 홍보 확대에 중점을 두고 있으며, 상영회, 문화 교류 및 두 나라의 창의적 인재를 선보이는 영화제 프로그래밍을 지원한다.
파트너십은 또한 영화 정책 및 규제 프레임워크에서의 지식 공유와 인공지능(AI) 및 디지털 제작 기술과 같은 분야에서의 영화 기술 및 혁신의 진전을 위한 협력을 강조하고 있다.
KOFIC의 한상준 위원장은 “작년 11월 사우디 아라비아에서 MBC 아카데미와 함께 부트 캠프를 포함한 많은 협력이 있었다”며 “오늘 체결한 협력 프로그램이 이러한 교류에 더 큰 모멘텀을 제공하기를 희망한다”고 말했다.
사우디 영화 위원회의 아브둘라 알 카흐타니 CEO는 “한국 영화 진흥위원회와의 이번 파트너십은 사우디 아라비아 영화 산업을 강조하고 글로벌 시장과의 연계를 강화하기 위한 지속적인 노력의 이정표"라며 "한국의 영화 산업은 역동적이고 영향력 있으며, 함께 일함으로써 우리 영화 제작자들에게 더 많은 기회를 창출하고 창의적 교류를 촉진하며 양국의 고품질 영화 제작의 성장을 이끌 수 있다”고 말했다.
