Seoul has issued a strong protest against Japan's renewed territorial claim over Dokdo, following a recent event in Shimane Prefecture that reaffirmed this claim. The South Korean foreign ministry summoned Taisuke Mibae, the deputy chief of mission at the Japanese Embassy in Seoul, to express its discontent on February 22.
The South Korean government conveyed its strong regret regarding the event and urged Japan to "immediately abolish" the annual commemoration. In a statement, the foreign ministry emphasized that Dokdo is historically, geographically, and under international law clearly South Korean territory, and called on Japan to acknowledge this reality.
The event, known as Takeshima Day, took place in Matsue, Shimane Prefecture, where local officials reaffirmed Japan's claims. Since 2013, the Japanese government has sent a senior official to participate in the event; this year, the parliamentary vice minister Eriko Imai attended.
Takeshima Day was designated by Shimane Prefecture in 2005, marking the 100th anniversary of Japan's unilateral incorporation of Dokdo into its administrative jurisdiction in 1905.

외교부는 spokesperson 이재웅의 성명에서 "일본 정부는 역사적으로, 지리적으로, 그리고 국제법상으로 명백히 한국의 주권이 있는 독도에 대한 부당한 주장을 즉각 중단하고, 역사를 겸허히 대해야 한다"고 밝혔다.
이른바 다케시마의 날 행사는 시마네현 마츠에에서 열렸으며, 이곳의 지방 자치 단체와 관계자들은 섬에 대한 일본의 주장을 재확인했다.
일본 정부는 2013년부터 매년 이 행사에 고위 관리를 파견하고 있으며, 올해는 심의 의원 부장관인 에리코 이마이가 참석했다.
시마네현은 2005년 일본이 1905년 독도를 일방적으로 행정 관할권에 편입한 100주년을 기념하여 2월 22일을 다케시마의 날로 지정했다.
