Choi Min-jeong of Korea celebrated her victory after winning the gold medal in the women's 1,000-meter short track speed skating event at the Asian Winter Games held at the Heilongjiang Ice Events Training Center Multifunctional Hall in Harbin, China, on February 9.
Korea exceeded its gold medal target at the Asian Winter Games in northeast China, achieving a total of 16 gold medals, five more than initially anticipated. This total ties with the country's Winter Asiad record set in 2017 in Sapporo, Japan.
The short track speed skating team was particularly successful, securing six gold medals in the first two days of competition. Choi Min-jeong, a three-time Olympic champion, led the team with three gold medals, while Kim Gil-li, Park Ji-won, and Jang Sung-woo each earned double golds.
Long track speed skaters contributed three additional gold medals, with 19-year-old Lee Na-hyun winning a surprise gold in the women's 100 meters and also helping secure the team sprint gold medal.
In snow events, Korea achieved historic victories. Ekaterina Avvakumova, a naturalized biathlete, won Korea's first Winter Asiad gold medal in the women's 7.5-kilometer sprint and also contributed to a silver medal in the women's 4x6km relay. Lee Seung-hun became the first Korean freestyle skiing gold medalist by winning the men's halfpipe title, while Lee Chae-un was crowned the inaugural champion of the men's slopestyle event.
Despite not winning gold in his main event, 18-year-old Lee did not secure the top spot in the halfpipe, as Kim Geon-hui, two years younger, claimed the gold after the final was canceled due to adverse weather conditions.
As the competition progressed, figure skaters and curlers also excelled. Korea achieved a historic sweep of the men's and women's singles figure skating gold medals for the first time. Kim Chae-yeon won the women's title with a personal-best score, defeating Japan's three-time world champion Kaori Sakamoto. Cha Jun-hwan secured the men's singles gold, overcoming a deficit after the short program to beat Yuma Kagiyama of Japan.
The women's curling team concluded its undefeated run by defeating China 7-2 for the gold medal, while the men's team earned silver after losing to the Philippines.
Many of Korea's standout athletes are either in their prime or still young, suggesting promising prospects for the upcoming Winter Olympics in Italy. Notable athletes include Choi Min-jeong, who is preparing for her third Olympics at age 26, and speed skater Kim Min-sun, the women's 500m champion at 25. Cha Jun-hwan, the men's figure skating champion, is 23, while the men's curling team features members born in the 2000s, with the oldest being 23-year-old Lee Jae-beom.
Teenagers such as 19-year-old speed skater Lee Na-hyun, who won four medals, and snowboard gold medalists Lee Chae-un and Kim Geon-hui, aged 18 and 16 respectively, also highlight the potential for future success. Figure skater Kim Chae-yeon, at just 18, has already earned an Asian Games gold and a world championship bronze medal.

18세의 이채운은 자신의 주종목인 하프파이프에서 금메달을 놓쳤고, 2세 연하의 김건희가 정상에 올랐다. 김은 예선에서 가장 높은 점수를 기록했으며, 최악의 날씨로 인해 결선이 취소되었고 결과적으로 금메달을 수상하게 되었다.
쇼트트랙과 스피드 스케이팅 경기가 끝난 후 피겨 스케이팅과 컬링 팀이 부진한 경기를 만회했다.
한국은 이번 대회 첫 날 남녀 피겨 스케이팅 단식 금메달을 모두 차지했다.
김채연은 개인 최저 점수인 219.44점으로 여단식에서 우승하며 일본의 3회 세계 챔피언 사카모토 카오리를 8점 가까이 제치고 우승했다. 이어 차준환이 남자 단식 금메달을 281.69점으로 차지하며 2022년 올림픽 은메달리스트인 일본의 카기야마 유마를 8.93점 차로 제쳤다.
차준환은 쇼트 프로그램에서 카기야마에게 9.72점 뒤진 상태였으나 자유 스케이팅에서 강한 모습을 보이며 역전 결정적인 경기를 했다.
여자 컬링 팀은 금요일 중국을 7-2로 이겨 무패 행진을 마감하며 금메달을 차지했으며, 남자 팀은 필리핀에 패하며 은메달을 획득했다.
하얼빈에서 활약한 한국의 여러 스타들은 아직 전성기에 있거나 극히 젊어 가능한 잠재력을 가지고 있어, 내년에 열릴 이탈리아 동계 올림픽에 긍정적인 신호를 보이고 있다.
최민정은 3번째 올림픽을 준비 중이지만 아직 26세이고, 스피드 스케이팅의 김민선은 하얼빈 여자 500미터 챔피언이자 이탈리아에서의 메달 후보로 기대된다. 차준환 남자 피겨 스케이팅 챔피언은 23세로 젊은 선수이다. 남자 컬링 팀의 모든 선수는 2000년대에 태어났으며, 스킵인 이재범이 23세로 가장 나이가 많다.
