LG Chem, a leading chemical firm in Korea, reported a net loss in the fourth quarter of the previous year, attributed to decreased demand for petrochemical and battery materials products.
The company recorded a net loss of 899.2 billion won ($613.3 million) for the three months ending in December, a significant decline from a net profit of 128.5 billion won during the same period the previous year, according to a regulatory filing.
A spokesperson for the company indicated that the downturn in the petrochemical industry and reduced demand for battery materials, particularly amid challenges in the electric vehicle sector, adversely impacted the quarterly financial results.
Additionally, LG Chem experienced an operating loss of 252 billion won in the December quarter, a stark contrast to an operating profit of 247.4 billion won reported a year earlier.
Sales for the quarter decreased by 6.1 percent, falling to 12.33 trillion won from 13.13 trillion won.
For the entire year of 2024, the company's net income plummeted by 74.9 percent, down to 515 billion won from 2.05 trillion won in the previous year.
Operating profit also saw a significant decline of 63.8 percent year-on-year, dropping to 916.79 billion won from 2.52 trillion won, while total sales fell by 11.5 percent to 48.9 trillion won from 55.2 trillion won.

LG 에너지 솔루션은 LG 화학의 주요 관계사인 한국의 대표적인 배터리 제조업체이다.
LG 화학은 또한 12월 분기에서 사업이익이 2474억 원에서 2520억 원으로 전환되었다고 밝혔다.
매출은 이 기간 동안 13조 1300억 원에서 12조 3300억 원으로 6.1% 감소하였다.
2024년 전체 순이익은 작년의 2조 500억 원에서 74.9% 급감하여 5150억 원에 그쳤다.
사업이익은 작년 2조 5200억 원에서 63.8% 감소해 9167억 원을 기록했으며, 매출은 55조 2000억 원에서 11.5% 줄어 48조 9000억 원이었다.
