The main opposition Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) held a rally near the Constitutional Court in central Seoul on February 22, calling for the court to remove impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol from office due to his brief imposition of martial law in December.
During the rally, DPK floor leader Park Chan-dae stated that South Korea would be "doomed" if Yoon were to return, labeling him the "mastermind" behind the December 3 martial law declaration.
Park emphasized the need for law and order, saying, "We cannot live in a lawless hell overrun by terror and riots."
Another DPK representative, Jeon Hyun-heui, expressed confidence that Yoon would be "certainly" removed by an 8-0 ruling from the court.
Currently, there are eight justices on the bench following the appointment of two by acting President Choi Sang-mok. According to legal requirements, a minimum of six justices must consent for an impeachment to be upheld.
The DPK estimated that approximately 35,000 people, including 80 lawmakers and party leadership, attended the rally, marking the party's first outdoor demonstration since the martial law declaration.
주요 야당인 더불어민주당이 서울 중심부의 헌법재판소 앞에서 집회를 열고 탄핵된 윤석열 대통령의 사퇴를 촉구했다. 윤 대통령은 지난해 12월 단기간 계엄령을 선언한 바 있다.
집회에서 더불어민주당 원내대표 박찬대는 윤 대통령이 복귀한다면 한국은 "멸망할 것"이라며, 그를 12월 3일 계엄령 선포의 "주모자"라고 언급했다.
"우리는 테러와 폭동으로 가득 찬 무법 지옥에서 살 수 없다"고 그는 말했다.
집회에서 더불어민주당 전현희 의원은 윤 대통령이 "8명 전원 만장일치로 해임될 것"이라고 예고했다.
현재 헌법재판소에는 8명의 재판관이 있으며, 이는 임시 대통령 최상목이 두 명을 임명한 결과다. 법적으로 탄핵이 유지되기 위해서는 최소 6명의 재판관의 동의가 필요하다.
더불어민주당은 약 35,000명이 참석했다고 추산하며, 이에는 80명의 국회의원과 당의 지도부가 포함된다.
이번 집회는 계엄령 선언 이후 더불어민주당의 첫 번째 야외 집회이다.
