Actor Seo Kang-jun participated in a press conference for MBC's upcoming comedy-action drama "Undercover High School" at the broadcaster's headquarters in Seoul on Thursday.
After completing his military service in 2023, Seo Kang-jun returns to the screen as Jung Hae-sung, a National Intelligence Service (NIS) agent who poses as a high school student. The series is set to premiere tomorrow and will air on Fridays and Saturdays.
Seo expressed his excitement about returning to the entertainment industry after more than three years, noting the significant changes he observed, including the evolution of actors' poses. He conveyed confidence in his ability to adapt and deliver a compelling performance.
The plot revolves around Hae-sung's dual life as he investigates the disappearance of gold bars from the Korean Empire. Seo is expected to showcase his versatility and martial arts skills throughout the series.
Seo revealed his attraction to the project stemmed from its unique blend of genres, including comedy, action, thriller, and crime. He emphasized that, while the drama is entertaining, it also offers deeper, thought-provoking themes.
Reflecting on his military service, Seo shared that the experience prompted significant personal growth and introspection regarding his career as an actor. He expressed no regrets about his past choices and is determined to approach "Undercover High School" with a mindset of no regrets, regardless of the outcome.
Director Choi Jung-in praised Seo's casting, highlighting his suitability for the role of a "handsome agent" and noting his sincerity and authenticity in his performance. She remarked that these qualities enhance the depth of his acting.
In the drama, Hae-sung enrolls at Byeongmun High School and interacts with his homeroom teacher, Oh Soo-ah, played by Jin Ki-joo. Soo-ah is portrayed as a dedicated teacher who finds herself emotionally connected to Hae-sung, reminiscent of a past love.
Jin described her character as someone navigating the challenges of teaching while facing personal dilemmas, aiming to reflect the complexities of young adulthood rather than merely fulfilling the role of a teacher.

31세의 이 배우는 금요일-토요일 드라마에서 국가정보원(NIS) 요원과 고등학생 역할을 오가는 정해성 역을 맡았다. 이 드라마는 내일 첫 방송된다.
서강준은 목요일 기자간담회에서 "3년 넘게 활동을 중단하고 돌아오니 세상이 많이 변했다. 배우들이 취하는 포즈조차도 다르다. 하지만 빠르게 적응하고 관객들에게 훌륭한 드라마를 선사할 것이라는 자신이 있다"고 웃으며 전했다.
이 시리즈는 1897-1910년 조선 제국 고종 황제의 금괴 행방을 추적하기 위해 고등학생으로 위장한 NIS 요원의 기복을 다룬다. 서강준은 뛰어난 판단력과 뛰어난 무술 실력을 바탕으로 '다재다능한 에이스'의 모습을 보여줄 예정이다.
그는 프로젝트를 선택한 이유에 대해 "이 드라마는 코미디, 액션, 스릴러, 범죄 등의 다양한 장르를 결합한 점이 매력적이었다. 쉽게 볼 수 있는 드라마도 많지만, 이 드라마는 더 깊고 생각을 자아내는 층이 있다"고 설명했다.
또한 그는 군 복무 후 겪은 내적인 변화에 대해서도 이야기했다.
"군 생활은 영원처럼 느껴졌다. 많은 생각을 했다. 과거를 돌아보고, 내가 어떤 배우인지, 왜 연기를 하고 싶은지, 어떤 배우가 되고 싶은지에 대해 생각했다"고 말했다.
"돌이켜보면 지금까지 했던 프로젝트나 걸어온 길에 대해 후회는 없다. 모든 것이 완벽하지는 않았지만, 선택할 때 항상 최선을 다했다. 이번 '언더커버 고등학교' 촬영도 '후회 없이 해보자, 드라마가 잘되든 안 되든 후회하지 않겠다'는 마음으로 임했다"고 밝혔다.

이번 드라마는 서강준의 안방 복귀로 관심을 모으고 있다. 최정인 감독은 전체 캐스트를 세심하게 조율했으며, 서강준의 캐스팅에 특히 만족감을 드러냈다.
감독은 "'잘생긴 요원' 설정에서 그의 외모는 확실히 통과였다. 하지만 촬영 중 그가 가진 매력을 더 많이 발견했다. 그는 매우 정직한 성격으로, 그의 캐릭터와 잘 어울린다. 그의 연기에 진정성이 반영되었다고 생각한다"고 말했다. "나는 연기의 디테일이 진정성에서 나온다고 믿으며, 그가 그 순간을 정말로 살고 있는 것 같은 느낌을 받았다."
드라마에서 해성은 자신의 정체성을 숨기고 병문고등학교에 입학하여 동아리 담임 선생님 오수아(진기주)를 만난다. 학생들을 사랑하는 수아는 해성과의 닮은 점에 이끌려, 과거의 아픈 기억인 첫사랑을 떠올리게 된다.
진기주는 학생들에 대한 사랑과 정교사가 되고자 하는 열정을 가진 임시 교사의 역할을 맡는다.
진기주는 "수아는 학생들에 대한 헌신과 그 헌신을 완전히 실현하지 못하게 하는 현실 사이에 끼어있는 인물이다. 나는 수아가 교사의 직무에 얽매이지 않고 젊은이들이 초기 사회생활에서 겪는 딜레마를 더 많이 표현하고 싶었다"고 밝혔다.
