Protesters from diverse political backgrounds gathered across the nation on Saturday, braving cold temperatures to participate in large rallies. One faction called for the immediate resignation of impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol, while another group opposed his ouster.
A rally led by conservative activist pastor Jeon Kwang-hoon took place in the Gwanghwamun area of central Seoul, where participants demanded Yoon's release from detention on insurrection charges related to his brief declaration of martial law on December 3. Protesters held signs asserting that Yoon's impeachment should be annulled.
Organizers estimated attendance at around 3 million, while police provided an unofficial count of 35,000. Yoon Sang-hyun, a lawmaker from the ruling People Power Party (PPP), addressed the crowd, encouraging them to maintain hope for Yoon's return.
In a separate rally near Gyeongbokgung Station, approximately 5,000 people demanded Yoon's immediate ouster and called for a swift ruling by the Constitutional Court regarding his impeachment. Nearby, around Anguk Station, an estimated 10,000 individuals participated in protests.
Similar demonstrations occurred in other cities, including Gwangju and Daegu. Gwangju hosted its first pro-Yoon rally since the martial law incident, organized by a conservative YouTuber, despite the local government's rejection of the assembly at a significant historical square. Instead, hundreds gathered to demand Yoon's ouster in their weekly protest.
The Gwangju Council of Citizen's Movement expressed outrage at attempts by ultrarightists to justify the martial law declaration, emphasizing Gwangju's status as a symbol of democracy. In Daegu, a significant rally against Yoon's impeachment featured several PPP lawmakers and North Gyeongsang Governor Lee Cheol-woo, while later in the day, civic and labor groups gathered to support Yoon's impeachment.

정치적 스펙트럼의 양극에 있는 시위자들이 극심한 추위에도 불구하고 토요일에 전국적으로 대규모 집회를 열었다. 한쪽은 윤석열 대통령의 즉각적인 사퇴를 촉구했으며, 다른 쪽은 그의 해임에 반대했다.
보수 운동가인 전광훈 목사가 이끄는 시위자들이 서울 중앙의 광화문 지역에 모여 12월 3일 단기 계엄 선언에 따른 내란 혐의로 구속된 윤 대통령의 석방을 요구하며 그의 탄핵이 무효화되어야 한다고 주장하는 피켓을 들었다.
주최측 추산에 따르면 약 300만명이 집회에 참석했으며, 경찰 비공식 집계는 35,000명으로 집계되었다.
여당인 국민의힘의 윤상현 의원은 집회 중 연설하며, 윤 대통령이 다시 환영받는 날이 올 것이라는 희망을 잃지 말라고 촉구했다.
광화문 인근 경복궁역에서도 약 5,000명이 모여 윤 대통령의 즉각적인 퇴진을 요구하며 헌법재판소의 빠른 결정 촉구를 외쳤다.
경복궁 동쪽 안국역 인근에서도 약 10,000명이 거리로 나왔다.
비슷한 시위가 서울에서 약 270킬로미터 떨어진 광주와, 235킬로미터 동남쪽의 대구 등지에서도 진행되었다.
광주에서는 12월의 계엄 사태 이후 처음으로 윤 대통령을 지지하는 반탄핵 집회가 열렸으며, 한 보수 유튜버가 조직한 이 집회에는 서울에서 온 시위자들도 포함되었다.
광주 광역시는 유튜버의 요청을 거절하고, 매주 모이는 시위가 열리는 민주화운동 기념 광장에서 수백명의 시위자들이 윤 대통령의 즉각 퇴진을 요구했다.
12월 이후 매주 집회를 진행해온 광주 시민운동협의회는 "광주, 민주화를 상징하는 성전에서 계엄 선언을 정당화하려는 일부 극우 세력에 대해 분노를 표명한다"고 밝혔다.
대구에서는 몇몇 국민의힘 의원들과 남경북지사 이철우가 참석한 대규모 반탄핵 집회가 열렸다.
오후에는 시민 및 노동 단체 수백명이 대구 중앙에서 윤 대통령의 탄핵을 지지하며 모였다.
