SK hynix announced on Tuesday that it has commenced construction on its first fabrication plant and associated facilities within a planned semiconductor cluster in Yongin, located south of Seoul.
The official groundbreaking occurred on Monday following approval from the Yongin municipal government the previous week, as stated in SK hynix's newsroom.
The Yongin semiconductor cluster is designed to serve as a vital production hub for artificial intelligence (AI) memory chips. It will integrate SK hynix’s fabrication plants with suppliers of materials and chip equipment, along with other necessary infrastructure.
Last year, SK hynix pledged an investment of 9.4 trillion won (approximately $6.6 billion) for the construction of the first fabrication plant.
According to the company's long-term strategy, the cluster will ultimately accommodate four SK hynix fabrication plants, with the initial facility expected to be completed by May 2027.
SK hynix plans to utilize the cluster as a production base for next-generation dynamic random-access memory (DRAM), including high bandwidth memory (HBM), to address the increasing demand for AI chips and lay a foundation for sustainable growth.
In conjunction with this expansion, SK hynix is also building HBM production facilities in Cheongju, located in central Korea, with an anticipated completion by the end of this year.
