A U.S. official responsible for issues related to the Korean Peninsula is currently visiting South Korea, diplomatic sources reported on Tuesday. This marks the first known visit by a U.S. State Department official since the beginning of the second Donald Trump administration.
Kevin Kim, deputy assistant secretary for East Asian and Pacific affairs, arrived in Seoul earlier this week and has met with key officials from South Korea's foreign ministry. Discussions have focused on the bilateral alliance and North Korean issues, according to sources familiar with the matter.
Kim's visit is perceived as a working-level trip aimed at managing U.S.-South Korea relations and refining Trump's North Korea policy, the sources indicated.
Of Korean descent, Kim previously served as an aide to a U.S. senator and worked in the State Department's office for the special representative for North Korea from 2018 to 2020 during Trump's first term. In that capacity, he collaborated with the then U.S. Special Representative, contributing to U.S. diplomacy regarding North Korea.

한국계인 킴은 이전에 미국 상원 의원 빌 해거리티의 보좌관으로 근무했으며, 2018년부터 2020년까지 트럼프의 첫 임기 동안 국무부 북한 특별대표실에서도 일했다.
그 당시 킴은 미국의 북한 외교에서 중요한 역할을 했던 스티븐 비건 특별대표와 협력했다.
