Lee Hyun-sook, founder and chairperson of Kukje Gallery in Seoul, has expressed admiration for nonagenarian artist Kim Yun-shin, noting her remarkable ability to create wooden sculptures at the age of 90. Kim's work, characterized by organic forms and vibrant colors, had largely gone unnoticed until Kukje Gallery and another gallery announced their representation of her in 2023.
Kim's career had been overshadowed since her relocation to Buenos Aires in 1984, but her recent participation in the Venice Biennale marked a significant breakthrough. Lee emphasized the rarity of discovering veteran female artists in Korea who have maintained their creative pursuits over the years.
Kukje Gallery has a history of promoting underrecognized Korean artists on the global stage. A decade ago, the gallery introduced a group of postwar “dansaekhwa” monochromists at the Venice Biennale, which significantly raised international awareness of this movement. Lee noted that the exhibition solidified dansaekhwa's importance in art history and highlighted the ongoing demand for these works in the global market.
Currently, Kukje Gallery is hosting a solo exhibition of Ha Chong-hyun, another key figure in the dansaekhwa movement, showcasing around 30 of his works. Lee has observed a notable shift in the Korean contemporary art scene over the past decade, with increased visibility for Korean artists at major international exhibitions and auctions.
Lee highlighted the influx of international galleries in Seoul and the resulting competition that could threaten local institutions lacking a unique identity. In response, Kukje Gallery is recalibrating its focus to promote Korean artists and emerging talents while maintaining a commitment to international collaboration.
The gallery has established a dedicated archival team to preserve Korea's modern and contemporary art history, recognizing the importance of documentation. At the upcoming Art Basel Hong Kong, Kukje Gallery will feature Kim Yun-shin's work alongside archival materials, showcasing her artistic journey over the past fifty years.
Lee envisions her legacy at Kukje Gallery as one of solidifying the presence of Korean artists in the international art scene, a mission she considers her final great task.

김윤신은 오랜 시간 동안 나무의 본질적인 속성을 탐구해왔고, 그 질감과 형태에 깊은 관계를 맺으며 그 재료의 본질을 존중해왔다. 그녀의 대표작 시리즈인 "Add Two Add One, Divide Two Divide One"은 1978년에 시작되었으며, 지난해 봄 쿠크제 갤러리에서의 개인전에서 전시되었다.

쿠크제 갤러리는 올해 아트 바젤 홍콩에서 김윤신의 조각 및 회화를 선보일 예정이다.
이 회장은 자신의 세 자녀가 갤러리의 미래를 형성할 것이라고 밝혔으며, 각자 갤러리의 중요한 역할을 맡고 있다고 강조했다.
“내 마지막 임무는 더 많은 한국 아티스트들을 국제 무대에 더욱 확고히 세우는 것입니다.”라고 이 회장은 덧붙였다.
