Korean short track star Choi Min-jeong claimed gold in the women's 1,500 meters at the International Skating Union World Short Track Championships held in Beijing on March 16.
Choi secured Korea's first gold medal of the championships by holding off Courtney Sarault of Canada. Another Korean skater, Kim Gil-li, earned the bronze medal in the same event.
This victory marks Choi's 13th career world title. She has previously been the world overall champion four times, with her most recent title achieved in 2022.
Choi also won the Olympic gold medal in the 1,500 meters at the same Beijing venue during the previous year's Winter Olympics.
On the previous day of competition, Korea did not secure any medals, with Choi finishing fifth in the women's 1,000 meters and Park Ji-won placing fourth in the men's 1,500 meters.
During the 1,500-meter race, Choi and Kim initially stayed at the back of the pack. With seven laps remaining, Choi took the lead while Kim was in fifth place. As the race progressed, Choi and Sarault battled closely for the top position, and Kim narrowly avoided a collision as three skaters fell with two laps remaining.
Choi maintained her lead over Sarault as they approached the finish line, while Kim secured the bronze medal with a significant gap over her competitors.
For Korean skaters, winning an individual gold medal and leading their respective teams in overall rankings will guarantee them an automatic spot on the national team for the 2025-26 season, which also serves as qualification for the 2026 Winter Games in Italy.
