A pregnant woman in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province, went into labor and was turned away by more than 40 hospitals before delivering her baby inside an ambulance.
The incident occurred on March 10, when emergency services received a report at 12:42 a.m. regarding the woman, who was 34 weeks pregnant. The Korean Emergency Firefighters Union reported that emergency responders assessed her condition as critical and sought assistance from obstetrics and gynecology departments at multiple hospitals in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and South Chungcheong provinces.
Despite the urgent need for care, hospitals cited reasons such as "obstetric care is unavailable at night" and "no staff is available to handle the case," leading to a prolonged search for an available facility.
Emergency responders made over 40 calls for more than an hour before securing a bed at Seoul Medical Center in Jungnang District at 1:48 a.m. However, the woman's condition worsened during transit due to intense labor pains, prompting responders to conduct an emergency delivery. She gave birth to a baby boy at 2:11 a.m., approximately an hour and 30 minutes after the initial call.
Both the mother and newborn were admitted to Seoul Medical Center at 2:36 a.m. for follow-up care, and reports indicate that they are in stable condition.
Kim Gil-jung, head of the Korean Emergency Firefighters Union, emphasized the need for institutional reforms to improve emergency patient admissions, stating, "To protect the golden time for emergency patients, allowing firefighters to determine hospital admissions must be implemented."

경기도 안산에서 분만을 앞둔 임산부가 즉각적인 의료 도움을 필요로 했으나, 40곳이 넘는 병원에 의해 거부당하고 구급차 안에서 아기를 낳게 되었다.
3월 10일 오전 12시 42분, 20대 여성(34주 임신)이 안산 단원구에서 진통을 겪고 있다는 신고가 119에 접수되었다. 한국응급소방원회는 화요일에 이 사실을 전했다.
응급 구조대는 신속하게 그녀의 상태가 위급하다고 판단하고 서울, 경기도 및 충남 지역의 산부인과 병원에 즉시 연락을 취했으나, 치료가 불가능하다는 답변을 듣게 되었다. 병원들은 “야간에는 산부인과 진료가 불가능하다”는 이유와 “해당 사례를 처리할 수 있는 인원이 없다”는 이유를 들었다.
응급 구조대는 1시간 넘게 40개 이상의 병원에 필사적으로 연락을 시도했다. 오전 1시 48분, 119 관제센터는 서울 중랑구에 위치한 서울의료원에서 병상을 확보했다. 구급차는 즉시 해당 병원으로 향했으나, 여성의 상태는 심각해지며 강한 진통을 겪게 되었다. 결국 응급 대원들은 응급 분만을 시행할 수밖에 없었다. 여성은 오전 2시 11분에 아들을 출산했으며, 이는 최초 호출 1시간 30분 후의 일이다.
모와 신생아는 오전 2시 36분에 서울의료원에 입원하여 후속 치료를 받았다. 보고서에 따르면 두 사람 모두 안정적인 상태이다.
한국응급소방원회 김길중 회장은 “응급 환자를 받아줄 병원을 찾는 과정에서 환자의 상태가 악화되었고, 응급 분만이 이루어졌다.”며 “응급 환자의 골든타임을 보호하기 위해 소방관이 병원 입원을 결정할 수 있도록 제도 개혁이 필요하다”고 강조했다.
