Korean figure skater Cha Jun-hwan has finished off the podium at the world championships in the United States, unable to add to the silver medal he captured two years ago.
Cha scored a total of 265.74 points, finishing seventh at the International Skating Union (ISU) World Figure Skating Championships held at TD Garden in Boston on Saturday (local time). The 2023 world silver medalist achieved 179.33 points in a clean free skate, ranking fifth among 24 skaters, but could not overcome a shaky short program from two days earlier, where he scored 86.41 points and placed 10th.
Ilia Malinin of the United States won his second consecutive world title with an overall score of 318.56 points, while Mikhail Shaidorov of Kazakhstan finished as the runner-up with 287.47 points. Yuma Kagiyama of Japan secured the bronze medal with 278.19 points.
By finishing in the top 10 as the only Korean in the free skate, Cha secured one quota place for Korea for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy, as well as an additional entry for the Olympic qualifying competition scheduled for September.
At 23 years old, Cha remains the only Korean male figure skater to have won a world championship medal.

차준환은 한국의 유일한 프리 스케이팅 선수로서 10위 안에 들어 2026년 이탈리아 동계 올림픽을 위한 1개의 쿼터 자리를 확보했으며, 9월 올림픽 예선 대회에 추가 출전권도 얻었다.
23세인 차준환은 세계 선수권 메달을 획득한 유일한 한국 남성 피겨 스케이팅 선수로 남아 있다.
