The average containment rate of all wildfires in North Gyeongsang Province rose to 94 percent on Friday, as improved visibility and cooler temperatures from overnight rain aided firefighting efforts in southeastern regions.
Since last Friday, a series of devastating forest fires have led to the nation's worst wildfire disaster, resulting in at least 28 fatalities, 37 injuries, and the evacuation of approximately 38,000 residents, according to the government's disaster response agency.
As of noon on Friday, the Korea Forest Service reported that an average of 94 percent of wildfires across five cities in North Gyeongsang Province had been controlled. Of the total 928-kilometer perimeter of the fires, 871 kilometers have been extinguished, leaving just 57 kilometers still ablaze.
North Gyeongsang Province Governor Lee Cheol-woo indicated that it is "possible" for firefighters to fully extinguish the main blazes in the province before sunset on Friday.
Approximately 48,000 hectares of woodland have been scorched, which is roughly equivalent to 80 percent of the size of Seoul. This figure exceeds the 23,794 hectares damaged by the east coast wildfires in 2000, which were previously considered the worst in the nation’s history.
Lim Sang-seop, chief of the Korea Forest Service, stated, "We plan to mobilize all available resources to extinguish the main flames by the end of the day."
Improved visibility and cooler temperatures resulting from overnight rain have created favorable conditions for controlling the fire, according to Lim.
"We will make every effort by deploying helicopters, personnel, and other resources to contain the fire," he added.
In a positive development, the rainfall overnight has enabled firefighters to focus on extinguishing the main blazes in various locations.
On Friday, approximately 5,580 personnel, 86 firefighting helicopters, and 569 fire trucks were deployed to fully contain the wildfire in Uiseong and other regions in North Gyeongsang Province.

이날 약 5,580명의 인력과 86대의 소방 헬리콥터, 569대의 소방차가 경상북도 의성 및 기타 지역의 산불을 완전히 진압하기 위해 배치되었다.
