The head of the election watchdog has issued an apology amid growing public backlash over allegations of unfair hiring practices involving the children of senior officials.
Roh Tae-ak, chairman of the National Election Commission (NEC), expressed regret in a public statement, acknowledging that the unfair hiring has led to "great disappointment and concern to the people."
Roh stated that he will actively consider various measures, including the implementation of external oversight, in addition to the reforms already achieved by the NEC, which include overhauling human resources regulations and strengthening the independence of audit agencies.
Recent findings from the Board of Audit and Inspection (BAI) revealed suspected nepotism related to the hiring of family members and relatives of both former and current NEC officials.
The BAI reported that NEC officials, from high-ranking officials to mid-level managers, had frequently solicited hires for their relatives, employing various illegal methods to secure these positions.
The BAI has recommended disciplinary action against 32 former and current officials for abuse of power and violations of hiring protocols.
Roh's apology follows a previous statement from the NEC, which reiterated its commitment to reviewing the establishment of a temporary commission led by external experts to reform its practices and restore public trust.

지난주 감사원(BAI)은 NEC의 현직 및 전직 공무원 가족과 친척의 채용에서 우선권을 가진 의혹을 발견했다.
BAI는 NEC의 고위 공무원부터 중간 관리직에 이르기까지 자녀 채용을 요청한 사례를 여러 차례 적발하였고, 채용 담당자는 불법적인 방법을 사용해 채용을 보장했다고 밝혔다.
BAI는 NEC에 대해 권한 남용 및 법규 위반으로 32명의 현직 및 전직 공무원에 대한 징계 조치를 요구했다.
노 위원장의 사과는 NEC가 대중에게 다시 사과하고 외부 전문가들이 이끄는 임시 위원회를 설치해 관행을 개혁하고 대중의 신뢰를 회복하겠다고 발표한 다음 날 이루어졌다.
