Gwangju FC faces a challenging situation as they prepare for a crucial knockout match in the AFC Champions League this week. The team will host Vissel Kobe of Japan in the second leg of the round of 16 at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Gwangju World Cup Stadium, located 270 kilometers south of Seoul.
Having lost the opening leg 2-0 in Kobe, Gwangju FC must secure a victory by at least three goals to advance to the quarterfinals. They are the only Korean club still in the prestigious tournament, following the elimination of Ulsan HD FC and Pohang Steelers during the league stage.
In both the league phase and the round of 16, teams from the East and West regions compete against opponents within their respective areas. The eight quarterfinalists will participate in a draw scheduled for Friday, where teams from different regions will be matched against each other.
All matches from the quarterfinals onward will be held in Saudi Arabia, the centralized host country, from April 25 to May 4, with each match being a single-elimination format.
By reaching the round of 16, Gwangju FC has secured $200,000 in prize money, with an additional $400,000 available if they progress to the quarterfinals. To facilitate their preparation, the K League has postponed Gwangju FC's matches from the previous weekend.
Despite the additional time to regroup, the team may still be without some injured players. Starting center back Byeon Jun-soo, who sustained an ankle injury in the first leg, will miss Wednesday's match, while forward Gabriel Tigrao may also be unavailable. Midfielder Choi Kyoung-rok's participation is uncertain as he has not played this season due to an undisclosed injury and will be a game-time decision.
Jasir Asani will be expected to lead the offensive effort for Gwangju FC. He is currently tied for the tournament lead with seven goals and ranks second in K League 1 with three goals in three matches this season.
