Korean Air Lines, the national carrier of South Korea, has announced a significant acquisition deal involving approximately 20 aircraft from Boeing and spare engines from GE Aerospace, totaling an estimated value of $32.7 billion, according to the country's industry ministry.
A pre-signing ceremony was conducted at the U.S. Department of Commerce in Washington, attended by notable figures including the chairman of Hanjin Group, Korean Air's parent company, as well as executives from Boeing and GE Aerospace.
As part of the agreement, Korean Air will acquire 20 Boeing 777-9 and 20 Boeing 787-10 aircraft by 2033, with an option to purchase an additional 10 aircraft. The deal with Boeing is valued at $24.9 billion and has been expedited for swift implementation.
Additionally, Korean Air and GE Aerospace have entered into an agreement worth $7.8 billion for the procurement of eight spare engines and associated engine maintenance services.
During the ceremony, the Korean Industry Minister expressed optimism that this agreement would enhance collaboration between the two allied nations, committing to support further industrial cooperation.
The minister's visit to Washington includes discussions with U.S. officials regarding tariffs and South Korea's designation as a "sensitive country," among other topics.

대한항공이 미국 보잉으로부터 약 20대의 항공기를 인수하고 GE 항공우주로부터 예비 엔진을 조달하여 총 327억 달러 규모의 거래를 진행한다고 서울 산업부가 금요일 발표했다.
사전 서명식은 워싱턴 D.C. 상무부에서 개최되었으며, 한진그룹의 조원태 회장, 보잉의 켈리 오르트버그 CEO, GE 항공우주 상업 엔진 및 서비스의 러셀 스톡스 CEO가 참석했다.
행사에는 또한 한국 산업부 장관 안덕근과 미국 상무부 장관 하워드 루트닉이 함께 했다.
계약에 따라 대한항공은 2033년까지 20대의 보잉 777-9 및 20대의 보잉 787-10 항공기를 인수하고, 추가로 10대를 구매할 선택권을 가지게 된다. 두 회사는 249억 달러 규모의 거래를 신속히 진행하기로 합의했다.
대한항공과 GE 항공우주는 78억 달러 규모의 계약을 체결하여 8대의 우주 엔진과 엔진 유지보수 서비스를 조달하기로 했다.
안 장관은 협정이 동맹 간의 폭넓은 교류를 촉진하기를 희망하며, 한국이 양국 산업 간 협력을 적극 지원할 것이라고 약속했다.
안 장관은 루트닉, 에너지 장관 크리스 라이트 등 미국 고위 관리들과의 회담을 위해 워싱턴을 방문하며, 미국의 관세 및 한국을 '민감한 국가' 목록에 올린 문제 등을 논의할 예정이다.
