Tensions are rising around Hahoe Folk Village in the southeastern city of Andong as wildfires that started in nearby Uiseong County last week are approaching the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site.
Hahoe, located about 190 kilometers southeast of Seoul, is renowned for its preservation of houses and traditions from the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2010.
The forest fire originated in Uiseong's Ansa district, approximately 7 kilometers from Hahoe, with smoke drifting into the village due to wind direction. The village's 200 residents were evacuated to safety early Wednesday morning, leaving the area deserted.
According to firefighters, smoke began to infiltrate the village around 10 a.m., with concentrations increasing after noon. The village was enveloped in thick gray smoke, making it difficult to breathe without a mask.
In response, authorities have deployed 14 firefighting vehicles and 98 personnel to mitigate potential fire-related damage to Hahoe village. Firefighters are actively spraying water and flame retardant on the village's houses and the surrounding pine forest every two hours.

산불은 하회에서 약 7킬로미터 떨어진 의성의 안사 지역에서 발생하였으며, 바람 방향에 따라 연기가 마을로 유입되고 있다. 마을의 200여 명 주민들은 수요일 아침 일찍 안전한 곳으로 대피하였으며, 현재 마을은 텅 비어있다.
소방당국에 따르면, 연기는 오전 10시경부터 서서히 마을로 흘러들기 시작하였고, 오후에는 그 농도가 짙어졌다. 마을은 짙은 회색 연기로 뒤덮였으며, 마스크 없이는 호흡하기 어려울 정도로 냄새가 강하게 느껴졌다.
당국은 하회마을의 화재 피해를 예방하기 위해 14대의 소방차와 98명의 인원을 동원하였다. 소방관들은 하회마을 주택과 주변 소나무 숲에 2시간마다 물과 불연성 물질을 뿌리며 바쁘게 작업하고 있다.
